I think this is a pretty acceptable topic for the lounge. More so than the pun wars and many other pointless posts.

Well, the guidelines say:
3. No sys-admin, networking or "How do I setup XYZ" questions...
So, our opinions aren't on the table. It's just the rules. Open for discussion, I think, but until they're changed, that's what we have... But... as a side-note, MY opinion is in agreement with the guidelines. I work as a sys-admin as well as a developer (as I suspect many here do), and for me, a question about PKI certificates is something I want to deal with when working (I request, retrieve and install certificates in various devices - from routers to web servers - regularly), but not when lounging. Pun wars and pointless posts (if they are amusing, and they often are), is EXACTLY what I'm after in the lounge... especially since they come from people that think (more or less) like me and have a similar frame of reference. So again, I agree with the guidelines. A lot. Then again, I probably wouldn't have put it so bluntly if I had noticed that the post was from a respected regular - it went a bit too fast there. Sorry for that! :-O

Seeking opinions on where to get a code signing certificate is WAY different from sys-admin or how do I setup XYZ questions.

Very true. So if the post would have read "where" instead of "how", I wouldn't have read it like "give me codez, pls!!!". I would probably have given a constructive answer instead, in that case.

Hi, I thoughtd I'd try a slightly more constructive answer than my last - I didn't understand you were seeking advice on where to get one, just HOW to get one (mechanically - I was thinking in terms of producing a request, submitting it, installing the cert etc). Sorry about that! Anyway: We have used all of the certificate issuers (for various kinds of certificates - mostly SSL - regular, multi- or wildcard) mentioned in the thread, and then some (Thawte among others). Presently we use only GoDaddy. They're relatively cheap and - more importantly - are easy to deal with. Also, their trust chain is shallow enough so as not to annoy even an iPhones... which is good. Only problem for us is that some "corporate clients" bounce at the NAME... they think it sounds silly and like the company isn't serious enough for their requirements... :) (no, the customer is NOT always right) This may be a Swedish problem, though... most companies here have extremely boring names, unless they sell toys or something...

thanks for this peter my reaction was somewhat hasty too ... apologies my problem with godaddy is the exact same thing as you mention ... the client is a large corporation in the pharmaceutical industry in belgium ... godaddy.com sounds like some weird porn site to them so i offered them the choices and let them pick the customer *is* always right as long as they are happy to pay for the privelege ;)

Hi again, Major OOOPS here! Just looked at godaddys support page. They don't issue code signing certificates to Belgium. Didn't think about checking that before, because Sweden is on the list. They need a reliable way of verifying that a company exists and has no major legal issues, and for some reason they don't seem to have that with Belgian authorities. The godaddy countries list[^] So... godaddy won't work and you should check if the other issuers you have suggested to the client work. I don't mind that complicated things are complicated... but why must the simple things be complicated as well??? :)
