I had to show my son how to use one of them, and he just didn't 'get' it. He found it funny that you had to remember the orders of magnitude as you went along. Kids today huh! I had an old physics professor who used the line "Don't worry, the calculations are easy, you will not need to dunk your slide rules in a bucket of water to cool them down". :)

Sounds like my old phys chem professor teaching trying to teach us statistical mechanics - he then told us not to worry as wouldn't be in any exam ever as at the time only about 6 people world-wide understood it and 5 of them were liars

Does anybody still use them? I do, I have one of These[^] that I use most days. I am sitting in front of a computer all day, but sometimes just reach for this as it is easier than switching apps, plus I can type faster. Who else? (Btw this calc is 13 years old. Original Battery, Never gone wrong and cost £5)

No that was "The curious incident of a large white German Shepherd and the antagonising postman waving the package through the letter box while the missus was out", not such a catchy title and now we have a post-box on the front of the house.... The former is an excellent book and can recommend "A spot of bother" too.....

I was thinking more of Silver Blaze[^]. However the other book by Mark Haddon was excellent.

Yes, I use my TI-84+ quite regularly. Partly, I suspect, because I have it right here on my desk, so it's easy to grab it and calculate something like 22-7 (yes, I know) or factor(1729) (not a standard function) Faster than going to wolfram alpha..

When I was working on accounting software I had a separate calculator. When I needed to make sure a transaction tied out, it was nice to just be able to reach over and start typing rather than try to use calc.exe. I left that calculator when I left that job and haven't missed it...

I have a solar powered calculator in my flight bag. Much easier to use than the tools they suggest using for calculating time and distance.

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. "And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" -- Robert Frost

Yes, I use one of these. I also have a TI-83+, but I haven't really used it since college (sometimes I use calc.exe).

I've still got my FX-7000G[^] which I do use; though not daily. It is over 20 years old and is on I think the 4th or 5th set of batteries. But it is one powerful calculator! :-D
