Has anyone else here tried this open source router firmware? I've installed it on a cheap D-Link wireless router and it works great, right out of the box (zip file). But now I'd like to configure it more specifically, and it has like a gazillion settings, at least half of which mean nothing to me. The website is useless, like most open source sites, because it's composed only of a user forum and a bunch of FAQs, all of which address only specific issues. I'm looking for a thorough manual, even if I have to buy a third party textbook. Does anyone here know of such a resource?

Perhaps a more general book on IP might give a good background and introduce the general concepts?

You can look here[^] and here[^], it has mostly been enough for me in the past (and if not, use their forum)

I have a good collection of books about IP and TCP/IP - they've invented settings that are far from standard, and fully expoit all the capabilities of the CPU in the box, but explanations of the terminology are rather terse, and completely incomprehensible.

Ah I see, I misunderstood. Sounds like an interesting project, do have a particular goal in mind or is it just hacking for fun?

No particular project is in my mind at the moment, but I'd like to explore and experiment with different configurations for possible future needs. I've noticed that this firmware unlocks the capabilities of the processor to do things that the original manufacturer never intended the device to do, and I'd like to explore those channels. For one, Client Bridging sounds useful to me, as I want to put my server in a remote location with a direct connection to the Internet, then bridge that connection to clients around the property - wired connection or not. I'd also like to block access by visitors to my LAN, but not prevent general Internet access from guests. The firmware can do all that, but without a manual I can't design a scheme to do what I would like to do and maintain a decent level of security.

              Why not ask DD himself?

I'm using it, mostly out of the box though.

I tried OpenWRT for several days on my Routerboard, but could not get it going like I wanted too :(

OpenWRT isn't intended as an end user platform. They're all about tweaking every last byte and clock cycle out of the hardware; but rely on people like DD-WRT or Tomato[^] to create viable user interfaces for their work.

Do I look like an end user? ;P Everything was working (web, interfaces, etc), but IIRC every kernel I tried that had bridging modules failed to boot the device, and that is what I really needed :(

I've been exactly where you are, attempting to get the box to act as an access client once, and a repeater currently. Upon failing to receive any comprehensible help, or in my case, failing to comprehend the available help, I resorted to my usual methods: randomly selecting options until the device seemed to do what I wanted it to do. It wasn't easy, and it took a damned long time, and I have no certainty that the device isn't locating my most private information and serving it to all my neighbors (LOL, the security settings are at least somewhat familiar), but configuring routing tables, or tweaking half a million RF settings was something I decided to leave to the space aliens who designed the device and its Linux interfaces. (I think DD is one of them...)

I have a photographic memory, but my processing lab is always late...
