I've been having serious motivation problems at work. Partly due to interruptions for support on previous projects, partly just plain "writer's" block and partly Code Project. So I've decided to try something I have rarely done since I started working full time, and not at all since I had kids: after hours programming. But I need something new, so I figure I'll try my hand at iOS development. The problem is I don't have a Mac. I was going to get a laptop, but when I look at the specs and the price I can't help but think about what a kick ass laptop I could get for that money from anybody else. The screens are too small for programming anyway. So now I think I'll go with the new Mac Mini, the $799 one; it's way cheaper (though still expensive for what you get of course), but it can replace my current desktop and use my big screen, and run Windows on it as well. (Assuming I can install it on something that doesn't have a fscking optical drive. Grumble grumble.) I'm hoping this will increase my general enthusiasm for programming, which is really the root of the problem. I hadn't realized how desperately I wanted something new, REALLY new, not just new APIs and frameworks. I've been in a Windows world for so long I forgot there was an outside world. I hope this goes better than the time I decided to start programming for BeOS :)

Funnily enough I've been doing iOS to avoid Microsoft Techology Fatigue and also wean myself of from 18 years of Windows development.

Who knows. Maybe you'll write the next killer app for an iPhone or iPad. God knows they need one. ;)

I Suppose if the iOS is ported onto industrial devices there could be a chance that businesses will start adopting over Windows.

Just a thought but have you considered developing for some of the open source initiatives, they do sometimes have interesting programming problems. I did them in college to sharpen my skills. And you don't need to buy an overpriced computer and pay some stupid amount, then sign an NDA'd EULA

That's not really exciting me at the moment. I like the idea of doing something on a hardware platform I've never touched before, and it's one I own (the iPhone). That desire to make it do something myself is something I haven't felt for a long time.

I knew I was headed down the dark path back when I bought my first Apple product, an iPod Nano, several years ago. I might as well finally let the full Apple experience dominate my destiny.

It's been 16 years of Windows for me. It took me a while to even realize or admit that I was fatigued. Has it helped?

Try the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool Page[^], the download link is somewhat hidden on the page so here it is, Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool Link[^]. Beware that this only takes ISOs that have been downloaded from Technet, MSDN etc. even if you have a licensed copy of the DVD and dump it to ISO it won't work, so if that's all you've got, try the link below. YUMI[^] is an awesome tool that allows you to put multiple tools and ISOs on there and provides a nice menu at boot time to allow the selection of what you want to run. I have not put a Windows ISO on there (I have standalone 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Edge for each Windows I need to install) but when I read about it it was a pain to have multiple ISOs with ine being Windows. Had to change directory names and Menu files on the USB to work around Windows, I'm the only OS in the world inferiority complex. So it may be that you will only want to put the Windows ISO on there and give it a shot. <ADDED> Might want to try Easy as 1 2 3[^] instead of YUMI for your Windows installation as I believe it won't have the problems YUMI alludes to, as it is only adding 1 installation not multiple. </ADDED>

Good luck!! I picked up a Mac mini 6 months ago and I really like it. i use it for video editing, Photoshopping and music. I have been toying with the idea of giving iOS development a whirl as well. Let us know how things progress!!

I picked up a second-hand Mac Mini recently, too, and it quickly become my primary machine. Anything from 2009 on should be pretty sprightly and (unofficially) can be upgraded to 8GB RAM. I also picked up a DVI KVM to switch between the Mac and my Win7/Ubuntu box.

What kind of software do you develop for Windows? I was in a similar situation a few years ago as I was getting sick of web programming. Since then I moved to game programming and it proved to be very different in nature than anything I've seen until then. Besides, there are lots of different sub-areas in it, all of which are fascinating in a most geeky way - 3D graphics, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, gameplay programming, networking, etc. To me it is a form of exaction/racket having to buy a computer from Apple just for the right to develop for their platform. Why doesn't Google require you to buy, say, a Chromebook for Android development? It doesn't matter whose platform is better - a vendor lock-in is always harmful in the long run. Orlin

The only downside to the Mac is the cost of the hardware compared to Windows hardware. So if Apple just started selling the operating system as well as there own hardware then M$ would loose out of a lot of sales

Yes, but they can't isn't it? They would have to make the feline OS to support a lot of hardware otherwise it would be useless on other than Apple machines. Then, they would understand that it is not easy to do what Windows does and have to face all the reasons of why an OS could look buggy. Just a thought. Cheers.

It sounds to me you just want us to give you our blessing and give you the final push throwing you to the Lion. Not me. I don't like Apple because they are building an empire on people's weaknesses. I know I shouldn't expect fairness in this world. but when I look at what software Apple creates and what IBM or Microsoft create and then I am told Apple's market value is bigger ... that's sad. Even though sometimes I feel some sort of boredom (you call it fatigue) my thoughs and wishes are not going to programming on another platform but towards freedom: like at least a year of having to do nothing but what I please. Then I would probably yearn for programming. And I mean Windows, .Net, because that's what I know best and I am far from finished exploring everything on this platform. But this is me and even without our approval you go "girl" and pump some new blood in the Matrix. I wish you success! (no sarcasm). Cheers.
