Anyone got a multi touch monitor ? Any recommendations ? I want to start playing with Surface. I can't find many available here in AU and I can't find any decent info on how many touch points they have. I want it to have at least 6, a lot seem to only offer 2.....

Thanks - I've found these sort of pages too, but what I want to know is, does multi touch mean 2 touches, or 10 ? I want to experiment with an app that would have 2 and 3 finger swipes doing something different to 1 finger swipe, so 2 touch points won't cut it for me. I found a wiki page, and it didn't list many at all with more than 2 points. I am hoping there's more out there.

Well the DataSheet for this[^] (link in box at top/right) says:

Unlike other technologies which only recognize a single touch point, optical touch recognizes multiple inputs.

but then goes on to say

So whether you touch your fingertip to the panel to scroll through screens or use two fingers to replace your mouse as you perform common multi-touch gestures, with multi-touch technology, your inputs will be recognized quickly, accurately and without drift. You can also easily rotate position, shrink and enlarge documents or navigate media rich 3D content.

So I guess that you would need to ask them for specifics.

I found a mob in Australia that sells only monitors, so I wrote to ask them.

I think Surface means the actual hardware. And I think that is supposed to support something like 50 touches (according to the deep recesses of the unreliable part of my mind).

Surface is the name of the Microsoft framework. It sits on top of DirectX, or WPF. How many touches the monitors support can vary, that's why I am chasing details before I buy.

It requires a multi touch monitor. Any multi touch monitor will do, as far as I am aware. I suspect it's like any hardware, there's a driver layer that turns the specific hardware in to something Windows can talk to.

I have a dell touchscreen monitor. The touchscreen works but it is totally useless in day to day job. The monitor quality though is very good.

Before you spend too much time developing apps for a multi-touch monitor I would suggest reading up on why many software houses do not develop apps for multi-touch monitors. The reason is that users develop something called gorrila-arm after about 15 minutes and it has been found that while tablets are ok multi-touch monitors are not a good idea... article clickety[^] This is probably why there are not many multi-touch monitors in existence...
