Since I work as a coder, I do not use a computer at home. Well, almost, because I use it to play or make music, but I do not sit in front of a computer doing things, which is what I mean by "using a computer". If I have a personal issue which I have to do using a computer, then I do it in work hours, as a break between completing and starting tasks. :-O I am curious how other developers do.

I use my computer at home for social interactions, looking up info, browsing, reading, lots of things... I try not to work out of hours though... But even this rule will be broken this evening... :-(

Commuting is just a short break in the big blue room, and it's hard to remember what sites I can surf from where I am.

I use laptop at home, for gaming, music, etc. It helps me holds my sanity against all those noise in the middle of the night.

Excuse me for my improper grammar and typos. It's because English is my primary language, not my first language. My first languages are C# and Java. VB, ASP, JS, PHP and SQL are my second language. Indonesian came as my third language. My fourth language? I'm still creating it, I'll let you know when it's done! :-D

I never program after work, when I am not working my time is dedicated to the children and the wife with some occasional me time. (read that as being down the pub or playing cricket/rugby)

I use my computer for music, social interaction, and work during working hours, and all that plus movies and games after hours. I try to keep after hours work to stuff unrelated to my daytime work, i.e. right now during the day I'm reformatting a god-awful ASP.NET reporting application, and at night I work on a fun to code betting advice web site, using all the latest and greatest MVC3 stuff at my disposal.

Since I no longer work all my computer use is in one sense, at least, 'after work'. Even when I was gainfully employed programming/computing was one of my hobbies and therefore took up at least part of my leisure time.

I work with computers all day so that I can afford to play with computers all night. Of an evening I may be flitting around on Wikipedia, keeping an eye on football latest scores and results, popping in to CP, IMDBing some actor I see in a TV Programme etc. Very rarely do I 'Work' with one at home. (Although I do occasionally try out stuff or do some non-work related programming).

After work I don't do any programming until my children and wives are cared for. Since I don't have any children and am not married (and don't intend to change that), I actually do have much time to write my own code. It's really fun when you have all the time in the world, nobody interrupts you and the moronic requirements are at least your own moronic requirements :)

I work in IT because for me it is a case of my hobby having become my career - I grew up with the Spectrum and BBC Micro which inspired me to go on to study computer science at university. So I work on my personal .NET projects at home at night and work on other people's projects during the day. I don't always feel that I need to 'switch off' when home - as IT is more of a part of my life than just a means of earning money.

I use my computer both at work and home. I occasionally take work home, if a deadline is important to me and closing in. Or if there's just a puzzle worth pursuing and I know I'm hot on the trail. Games at home. Code project usually at home with an occasional dip into it at work. I work as a contractor and often am in exactly the wrong kind of position to even have the appearance of not keeping my nose to the grindstone. And they usually place me such that everyone can see my screen. I imagine a lot of my clients have been burnt before or are simply worried that a contractor might have other plans than work on a given day. I expect some have had contractors sitting there doing work for someone else while they were supposed to be working on their project. When I try to work on any of my numerous personal projects; well most of them have something to do with a computer.

For the national anthems, yes, I do celebrate Indonesia's independence day with my friends. But that's just a mere 2 days (16 and 17).

I use a computer continuously. I have a pile of servers at home, and also use my laptop to code, on the train. Usually on the train I research stuff to keep my skills sharp, and then use them on personal projects. My hobby, is my work. I'm a happy camper.

Bloody hell, I have a more powerful system at home than I do at work, I have all the latest release tools installed along with beta stuff I may be testing. I do my research from home as the net nazi tend to slap a restriction on random useful sights. I have absolutely no personal stuff on the work computer (POS that it is) and browsing tends to restricted to coding related sights and some news sites. I would assume that you either have a low work load (and can therefore do your R&D at work), have little or no intention of progressing beyond your current capabilities or are just not a dedicated geek.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

I came into work due to being a hobby programmer, so I still keep that up to some degree, though not as much as before I got a job in computing. I also use a computer at home for general web browsing, games, forums etc which aren't work related, as it doesn't feel fair to charge for that time (plus we have a moderately strict web policy). CodeProject and other coding sites are okay, though.
