Before this year is over there will be over seven billion humans alive at the same time according to a report from some French institute. That's about 2 acres (~4,8ha) of habitable land for every person. So, we may want to start thinking about restructuring our planet. I suggest we begin be moving all the Apple stores to the north pole to clear space for more pig farms. With enough bacon, we'll have all the energy we need to start strip-mining Antarctica and use that landmass to connect all the continents. Then we move Greenland somewhere close to the equator and call it Mega-hawaii.

    Giraffes are not real.

Why not build multilevel pig farms? Instead of building huge skyscrapers to contain commercial space, build skyscrapers with pig farms on each floor. Bacon shortages won't be a problem.

No it's about 2.1 hectares each of land or a density of 45/km2. But there's room for more, Monaco has 15,142/km2 and they don't seem to worry.

While you have some good ideas that I like, according to this link[^], we won't be reaching the 7 billion people mark until November 29, 2012 11:26:56. That makes it a little more than a year (approx. 16 months) away from now. :)

We are fucking ourselves to starvation. Then you get 'Religious' Leaders who say that breeding like vermin is the way god likes it, and that unnatural contraception is evil. Well, the resultant reduction in population will be completely natural, they will starve to death. Look at Somalia and Ethiopia, starvation and drought again, only this time there are 3 times the population as at the time of Live Aid. Contraception must be a condition of international aid. true, but I don't suppose they grow much there - in fact I would guess (warning completed made up stat alert) that people living in Monaco are one of the largest net users of our planets resources.

Why? It is not as though we are killing people. The news report I have just seen shows a Somali woman who had walked 100 miles to the Kenyan refugee camp. She had 5 of her children with her, two had died on the way. Seriously? 7 children in a country where you are starving to death? Have these people not considered that having children is a problem when you cannot feed them? If there is any Genocide, they are doing it to themselves.

It's self-perpetuating. Posit: A large percentage of children are dying young Consequence: Women have more kids in the hopes that more will reach adulthood Result: The same amount of food is divided among more children, so a larger percentage of children die young Conclusion: People are a problem (Wow, subtle references to both Sneakers and Hitchhiker in one post, neither of which would have been noticed had I not added this little note... Not bad for 9am)

That's why I only said close! Taking away a nation's ability to procreate seems to extreme for my tastes. Not forgetting the fact that these are third world countries we're talking about - infant mortality is high due to poverty and a lack of medical care (as it was in the UK 100 years ago) and for many families, having more children is the only way they can ensure that some survive and that there are offspring able to provide an income for the family in the future.

You want your food? Get your vasectomy first.

You seem angry. I cannot be sure, but every one of my 86 children tell me I'm perceptive and have a "gift" for picking up on that sort of thing.

Unfortunately the two are connected - where there is a high child mortality rate there also tends to be a high birth rate. As you are pointing out though(and thankfully) - many more children are surviving their early years and as a consequence the population balloons. The education of women is probably one of the most influential factors in these situations - the more one can allow women to take charge, of their own lives, the less they are caught in the cycle of poverty and large families...

Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.(Winston Churchill)
