Compaq were built like tanks. Trust me, I did service work on corp PCs from 1985 to about 2000, well before HP bought Compaq. I was fixing IBM PCs far more often than Compaqs. We were shipping more Compaqs than IBMs at the time too so it wasn't market share making that difference for us.

Then again I suppose I only worked on em after 2000 really hard core in about 2005 so I might have a bad impression of them. But if it was not an HP it was a friggin Compaq. My parents have had a string of them that were nothing but trouble

I encountered a few around 1986 and that was the consensus, too.

Bloody hell 15 years in service, my hat ascends. I have zero knowledge of hardware and therefore am really impressed by your perseverance. 1986-1990 I was selling Compaqs and yeah they were robust and by far the most reliable machines. Really pissed me off when HP killed the brand.

That just shows how much you know. They were big dinosaurs!

HP want to spin off their PC business[^]. Now that would be irony, if they called the spin off Compaq. I liked Compaq, they did an excellent job with quality and innovation, it was a sad day when HP killed them. A great brand was lost.

I am quite suprised they are spinning off their whole PC Business, HP/Compaq is a trusted brand when it comes to Office PC's and Servers. Prehaps they are just spinning off their Retail PC Operation, I suspect not much money is made there as there is less Brand Recognition, people are more inclined to choose the likes of Advent, Sony or Dell if they are in PC World or Currys..

I meant its heartening to see a PC giant moving away from its primary business... But as an organization...you may have to make such calls to keep the balance sheet in green..

I loved Compaq, I had a machine in the late 90's, early, 00's. Powerful, never an issue, the think was useful far beyond its life expectancy.
