CO2 causes Alien attacks!

This is so laughably funny I had to post it: Rising greenhouse emissions could tip off aliens that we are a rapidly expanding threat, warns a report says Shawn Domagal-Goldman of Nasa's Planetary Science Division and affiliated scientists and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University [^] I am thinking cart-horse here. Shouldnt they prove the existence of Aliens before worrying what they might think about our activities? Not only that, dont you suppose the Iraq war, Guantanamo bay, and rioting in the UK might be of more concern to them? :)

The only logical explanation is that they know about the existence of aliens, but haven't told us yet :-)

In a word ..no.. Assuming the aliens are more advanced than us, we need to assume they can detect us before them. Therefore, if we don't want them to detect us we have to stop emitting greenhouse gases immediately. I call on all people everywhere that believe this to turn everything they own off, unplug the refrigerator, everything, and then hold your breath until you die. Problem solved. On the other side of the coin... With programs like SETI whose purpose seems to be to find and attract aliens here, wouldn't that group say lets increase the greenhouse gases so providing another carrot?

Not really - the rise in CO2 emissions can (in theory) be spotted at a considerable range via spectography, rioting can't. If your telescope has a long enough base line then spotting rising levels could be done over lots of light years - we aren't that far off doing that ourselves, and that is with just the Kepler space telescope, without launching the Jame Webb (if it actually launches) in 2018.

Well in theory they can; but that doesn't make the concern any less ridiculous indeed. I think we're not so far away ourselves of having the technology for getting detailed information out of the atmospheric composition of exo-planets. And to monitor all the planetary systems in range in real time is just a matter of having a good reason to do so. The main problem is that it'll take a couple of centuries, or even millennia before the Aliens find out; assuming that they have the technology to monitor every planet within range at the same time. And there are probably hundreds of other reasons why CO2 levels can rise on a planet "Alien civilization is having a big bbq" isn't the first thing that would come to mind, but who knows how Aliens think...

No, fat__________boy, you had to post it as you thought we wouldn't notice yet another AGW post.

The aliens were already here, and they left after collecting some post cards, a shot glass and a t-shirt that said "I went all the way to Earth and all I got was this shirt". Oh, and some duty free bacon.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

Maybe this is why we discontinued our space program. If we're not leaving our planet, we're less likely to be perceived as a threat.

You could substitute the word "God" for aliens quite nicely here.

Well, there are two problems with that thought. 1) You couldn't probably couldn't tell CO2 caused by rapid industrialization from a highly volcanic planet (or anything of the sort). 2) By the time the rays reached them, it would be millions of years later, so its likely either we'd already be dead or a huge galactic empire ready to destroy them.

Well, the milky way is only 100,000 light years wide, so it wouldn't take millions of years! The difference between CO2 from volcanism is debatable - volcanoes here emit water, CO2 and SO2 mostly (in that order), so any increase in CO2 not accompanied by the other two would be significant. However, this may not be the case on other planets, but it is likely that sulphur compounds would indicate natural processes rather than industrial. Probably worth sending a probe anyway!
