ok I know what this guy is bitching about does not apply to most of us as users, but I bet it applies to a lot of us as the "fixer" blog EDIT: Just thinking about it, a lot of his points apply to programming as well as hardware...

Programming is a race between programmers trying to build bigger and better idiot proof programs, and the universe trying to build bigger and better idiots, so far... the universe is winning. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

So true. That's why I stopped fixing computers for people unless they pay me. But once people know you're "good with computers" (which really means "know how to Google"), you never get left alone. It's worse when people expect you can fix their problems without ever having contact with the machine

lol so true, and whats worse is how easy it is to impress somebody who doesn't know any better. My kids and my wife are not very technical really. and are not interested in being such. I installed logmein free on all my machines at home to make it easy to connect. Its like it was magic to them. Dad is suddenly GOD OF COMPUTERS because I could remote into their machine from work to fix a small issue. Ok they are not technical, I give them that one. But just a few days ago I started setting up logmein Pro on my decently sized work network.. My boss who USED TO BE THE IT DIRECTOR before he got promoted, was flipping amazed at what I could do with it... sigh and the people in the general work force here, are back to the "its like magic" routine.. On one hand I let them think I am just that good, on the other its difficult to deal with them sometimes because its like I speak a whooooooole nother language. I even had one give me that blank look when I told her to "open a browser".......

About 10 years ago, I helped a friend starting a small business with his computer/networking/printing needs. It was a small office of about 5 to 6 loan originators and a receptionist. All was well for a couple of weeks, then I got a call about how slow the network and computers were. A quick look at the router logs revealed massive amounts of traffic to/from kazaa/limewire/napster and porn sites. After blocking the most obvious sites at the gateway, things were better...until the office manager (owner's son-in-law) called and complained about not being able to download music and porn and asked me to undo the changes to keep the staff happy. I did, and then let them know that I wouldn't be helping them anymore. I have also helped friends setup their home networks and broadband connections. When their internet connection goes down, do they call their ISP? They do now. I still have relatives that I have spoiled with the remote desktop. Usually, when I am helping them solve a problem, I will google it on their end and talk them through what I am doing, thinking they might learn something and try to solve their own problems the next time. Some get it, some never do...they really just want you to fix it, and don't really care how you did it...reminds me of tutoring programming classes back in college.

Even worse... I have a friend who thinks he knows quite a bit. I tell him I got computer problems and just spent the whole afternoon trying to fix it. Wrong. This friend now decides to get helpfull, he'll look at my computer. Me: "No, don't! I think I already know the problem!" Him: "No problem, I got it fixed in no time... Maybe this will work" Me: "No, that's the volume button... " You don't know it. Admit it. Give me back my computer. An annoying doesn't-know-anything-about-computers-person should not try to fix one... But he's a friend, can't hurt his feelings either by telling him he doesn't know shit :sigh:

                                  It's an OO world.

ok I know what this guy is bitching about does not apply to most of us as users, but I bet it applies to a lot of us as the "fixer" blog EDIT: Just thinking about it, a lot of his points apply to programming as well as hardware...

Programming is a race between programmers trying to build bigger and better idiot proof programs, and the universe trying to build bigger and better idiots, so far... the universe is winning. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

I hate working on others puters. I found that if I charge them I don't have too so much. In all honesty I give them a huge break on price but I find that my time is worth something. A plumber friend one time asked me why I wanted to charge him. I replied with tell you what. I will deal with your "shit" on your computer for free if you come over and deal with my "load" on my drain system for free. We can just do a standard trade. He didn't like that idea but he quickly saw my point. I usually respond to most questions with http://lmgtfy.com/[^]
