Take all your coins out your wallet/purse. If they have dates, let us know the oldest one you got. Sorry, special or trick coins do not count. Mine is from 1991, and it is going into vending machine now :)

I have a 2p coin[^] from 1971 - the very year that Britain went decimal! It will be made of real bronze, unlike the modern copper coated steel - I may sell it for its scrap value!

Wow! Just think if you could somehow track the history of that coin since it came from the mint.

Here in the states it's quite surprising what you can find in a handful of change, I still occasionally find pennies from 20's on. They still look very much the same as more contemporary pennies with Lincoln on them. My father is an avid numismatist who exhorts us to always check our change. (but tells us to forego the Canuckian coins... )

It was broke, so I fixed it.

Among US coinage it certainly is. It's from the era of large cents, so it's somewhere between the size of a quarter and a half-dollar. I like to ponder the history that coin has seen, who may have handled it, etc.

Wow, I'm glad you asked. I happen to have a 1944 silver nickel, minted in Philadelphia. The coins are usually an alloy of copper and nickel, but during WW II, nickel was so important to the war effort that for three years the coins were made of an alloy of copper, silver and manganese. It's in fine condition, too. I've been collecting coins for decades, and these things are rare: most were pulled from circulation after the war.

A 1982 penny - no mint mark. Curiously, no other denomination is older than 2000, but several of the pennies are form the '90s and late '80s. I'm guessing pennies stay in circulation longer than other coins. Of course, this could be a regional thing. I live next to a bunch of casinos, and most people play $.05, $.10 and $.25 machines. This might cause the local coin population to be skewed, as the machine wear out coins quickly, and pennies would wear the least.

Take all your coins out your wallet/purse. If they have dates, let us know the oldest one you got. Sorry, special or trick coins do not count. Mine is from 1991, and it is going into vending machine now :)
