Can a country/city prevent game designers use their country/city layout for games? For example, could London prevent a game to use their city as layout for their games? I'm not talking about using an existing map (for example copyrighted michelin maps) and use that in the game without paying dues, but just the game designers create a map out of an existing city/country ? I assume the city layout is public domain, but ... wondering mind.

    Watched code never compiles.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't create the map in the likeness of the city, especially from memory. That's just art. But I would also suppose it depends on what country you live in. One rule I always keep in mind is "Even if I am right or the law is on my side, can I win a fight against the other side", ie. Companies with deep pockets for lawyers, the government... my wife.

Played GTA IV? Liberty City is loosely based on New York City. Funny thing, my duaghter doesn't play the misions she just likes to interact with the envirionment driving the cars around, hailing cabs and such. But she will point out the actual landmarks on TV when shes sees them on Cash Cab a cable TV game show takes takes place in NYC.

It was broke, so I fixed it.

It's even more fun if you live here... One of those fast, maneuverable sports cars is always parked about where my old apartment is, so it's easy to find.

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

The fun thing there is that they wont jump out if you're going to fast. They usually freak out and scream if you take em off some off the big jumps.

Ahh, ok... Been a while since I played. Unfortunately, the PC version had a nasty bug that made it crash during the final mission, when I tried to jump into the helicopter... At that point, I kinda lost interest.

I don't think the city or country can do anything about it but beware of using real business names and adverts. That could cause problems.

Interesting question! I agree with one of the other posters, I don't think there's anything they can do as long as you don't use any real names. On a related note, when Quake first came out, a couple of my colleagues (at the time) and I started creating our own map based on the building we were working in. We included all the atriums, stairways, and cubicles; most of the pillars and lights. It was a lot of fun but we never finished it. I've thought about trying again from memory but....
