... because a Calendar control was not working on an internal developed website ( you could manually change a date for a future date, but not for a past date). The IT guy takes over the control of my machine, and DELETE ALL MY COOKIES without even asking ?!! 0. Please how can my cookies affect a frigging control that is not working ? 1. Can't you ASK before you delete anything on my machine ? Did it occur to you that I have now to spend at least an hour before I have all my passwords restored again in all the websites I am loggin on every day ? What a moron. Plus he - of course - did not solve the problem. Note for self: Never, ever, allow remote control of my machine anymore.

He went to school. You did not. At least that is the idea the support guys at my place think the world works.

You have to understand that the sole reason IT departments exist is to make our (SW Developers) lives as difficult as possible. Conversly the only reason SW Developers exist is to make IT departments lives as difficult as possible. It is a perfect symbiotic relationship and should just be accepted for its beautiful simplicity.

Makes me wonder what was saved in tempfiles and cookies, but that's "my nature". It's hard to say as I don't know the type of app, development you were working on.

Problem with that statement Rage, It can be used for any level of IT. Everyone knows it. It's because we all have our own talents and quarks, and abilities.

Nor did I, for god's sake !! Hope you did not take my remark about some IT guys being smartasses personally. I was only mad at him because he deleted things without asking, not because he tried things that obviously weren't related to the problem ( after all, that's his job, as you explained, and sometimes it works). The security policies in my company have us remember at least 15 different passwords, and it is a real PITA when you have to retype them all just to be able to access your documents. Plus it made me having to redefine one for accessing our teleconferencing system, making me appoint late to a meeting.

Nope, I suspect a bug in the Java code. I would have forgiven him, if it had worked :-\

Oh my don't get me started with that... To convince DELL that I know what the problem on my laptop was is taking to replace all parts of the laptop and reinstall the OS dozens of times.

I will spend the time to find the root cause and explain it to my IT dept in order to avoid that kind of "*stuff* happens" situation.

Wow, I certainly hope none of those websites, with saved passwords, you login on every day are for banking or retirement accounts. If you think re-saving all your passwords is a PITA, wait until someone gets access to your machine with all your saved passwords and drains you accounts!!!

I had a lot of such answers. Honestly, what are the odds that something like that _really_ happens ? I mean, someone must go through my hard drive security, then dismantle my laptop to get my HD, install it on another system, open my browser, go to my website, ensure the encrypted cookies are still compatible, or extract the saved password from them, use it to access my banking website, try to steal money by guessing both the security code that I have in my wallet and the one that gets SMSed me, and wire it to an account that he would have then to close as soon as possible for not being tracked down. This risk vs. having to remember and retype a password every day ?

There is a big drive on with Desktop Support (or whatever they are called now) to resolve calls as quickly as possible. Not to fix problems. Just to resolve calls.

Exactly. The support personnel aren't being measured on whether they can solve problems, only on whether they can convince callers that continuing would be a waste of their time. And then companies wonder why their competition is, well, so competitive. And don't even get me started on those "surveys".. the first question should always be "was your problem actually resolved?" :)

We can program with only 1's, but if all you've got are zeros, you've got nothing.

You're right, the odds are minimal. But the question was: Which PITA is greater, remembering your passwords or losing the money in your accounts? Note: The odds of winning the lottery are also minimal.
