Simple answer: no, it's too late. The CO2 in the atmosphere now has a residence time of ~150 years so even if we stop emitting completely today, some warming will continue. Politically, also, no, because countries like China and India are pushing on with coal power and oil-driven transport and that will outweigh any technical solution we come up with in the west. The time to do something about it was 10-15 years ago. At this point it is more about how to mitigate the negative consequences as best as possible.

The time to do something about it was 150 to 200 years ago. There are far greater issues threatening the human race (after all the planet will carry on without us if we cannot cope here anymore) than any man-made climate change that does exist. Too many people, not enough resources. Once the planet is unable to sustain people the people will find it harder to survive and will start to decline in numbers. That is nature in action, dealing with a problem. To divide everything into natural or man-made is incredibly arrogant of the human race.

Actually it is thin people doing all that exercise that is causing warming. :)

Yep, if we all switch to eating Kangaroo it'll fix the problem. Not sure how good Kangaroo milk is though.

Hard words, but true. I have totally lost faith in charities given what I have learned about where the money ends up.

When we all got conned into giving money to Ethiopia back in the 80's, we were told it would be for their benefit. We saw how a lot of it was stolen and misappropriated etc. The population of Ethiopia today is double that of the 1980's. Whose fault is it when they starve? Not mine.

I recently developed an awesome plan to solve most of the worlds problems in one go: This is based on the following observations: - Africa has a lot of sand - Africa has a lot of sun - pompous western do-gooders will pay extortionate sums for 'ethnic' things 1. Teach starving africans to make glass out of all the sand 2. Trade food with the africans for their glass 'ethnic art' 3. Use money from ethnic art to buy various electronic components 4. Get (no longer starving) africans to make more glass 5. use electronic components plus glass to make sh*tloads of solar panels 6. Cover most of africa in solar panels turning it into a massive solar power plant 7. Run a cable to the rest of the world 8. retrain africans to polish solar panels 9. Sit back and bask in the warm fuzzy glow of knowing you solved starvation in africa, the world fuel crisis and global warming in one go EDIT : 10. learn to count to 9, doh!

The one vote wasn't mine. But the topic is pretty much off limits in the lounge. You have been here more than long enough to know that.

As much as we don't like hearing about global warming, it is not a Backroom topic, IMHO.
