Does that actually work for you? I get the profile popups whether the 'Profile Popups' checkbox is checked or not. (I'm using IE8 -- could be a setting somewhere affecting how it works for me.)

Works fine for me - and has done since it started. Chrome 13.0.782.220 m and working ok. Did you press the "update" button after you checked the box?

Yes, I did. This has always been a mystery issue for me, but I hardly miss it so it's not really an issue.
