You could always support the USA. They're in Pool C with Australia, Ireland, Italy and Russia; their opening match is Sunday vs Ireland.

Rugby is like American Football, except that they do not stop for committee meetings every 3 minutes, and other than a gumshield and some tape to stop their ears being pulled off, they wear no body armour. Here[^] is Chabal, the French Neanderthal. Or Johnson[^], the English Neanderthal and our team boss. Handsome brutes!

Indeed Rugby is for real men/idiots only, I can't recall in any other sport where a play asks for his Gentleman's special place to be sown back up (including pushing a bit back in) so that he can re-join the fray - Wayne Shelford[^] [Edit]Read the "Battle of Nantes" piece[/Edit]

It is a game for real men. And there have been some classic moments of pain where fingers are reset, or blood spurts freely. Not for the fainthearted.

Now that I'm officially a grad student at University of Wisconsin (online), do have to quit cheering for the San Diego Chargers, and become a Packers fan? Or does that only apply if I watch college football?

          Will Rogers never met me.

I once snapped my ankle at the bottom of a collapsed maul in a varsity match - only to be told by my "team mates" afterwards that it was my own fault for cutting inside and getting involved in the real match rather than the nancy stuff I normally got up to. (I was a winger in my day - although that was a looooong time ago)

I am pretty, so you can tell I was a back. I was a wing three quarter, although occasionally played Stand Off.

Not true any more. In the senior game you need padding like this[^] now especially in the pack. At natiopnal level and above everyone wears these.

Well I used to live in San Diego and I've never seen these "Chargers" of which you speak.

Honestly, I have seen all of this first hand on the ice rink. I only played at the high school level. I lost a tooth midgame, stuck it back in my mouth immediately, and somehow it stayed. It's chipped and slightly grey 13 years later.

No, attending a school in/from a different state does not have to trump native sports loyalties. I'm a WI native living in MN and I've never cheered for the Vikings unless the Packers needed them to win in order to get to the playoffs. Of course, given the amount of talk about beer and food around here I don't know why you wouldn't want to be a fan of teams that are all about beer, cheese, and brats. :)
