Why Windows 8 Sucks Today
-
Without the usual Start menu, it appears that you have keep switching back to the Metro screen to launch apps. I can't find where the choices are for Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate. All I see are Lock and Log off.
The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.
Seems like first post regarding "Windows 8 Sucks!" :)
If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much. Is this "soon" as in "Soon the sun will burn out and turn into a red giant"? - OriginalGriff

I noticed that too, but my cow-orker found that once locked, the other options appear.

The fastest way to shutdown that I've found is to press Alt+F4 on the desktop and click [OK]. Alternatively (but one step longer) press Ctrl+Alt+Del, click the power icon on the bottom right and shutdown. For users without keyboards there doesn't seem to be obvious, short ways. One is to click the start button (to get to Metro), click the user icon, log off, click and hold the picture and move it upwards, click the power button on the right and shutdown. Another one is to click the start button, move to the bottom left such that the menu appears, click Settings, and on the right there's a power button.

This is likely (hopefully?) just because this is a developer preview, and MS wants developers to write Metro apps. There's a hidden registry switch to turn the start menu back on, I would expect that option to be exposed in the UI (maybe even during installation) in the final product. That said, I was surprised to find that I don't care about this change all that much: I wasn't clicking through the start menu anyways, just using search - and that still works using the exact same key presses as in Win7.

On Tablets and/or Notebooks, just use the power button on the device. On a desktop it's not nice to have to grab below the desk, but I don't think the Metro UI is intended for desktop usage anyways. If you turn Metro off, you get back the start menu with the shutdown button.
