Laptop Monitors---going backwards

What happened to the monitors with nice verical pixel counts? Just got done looking for a new laptop, and the vertical pixel counts are horrid. 15.6" monitors on high end machines at 1080 and decently priced at 768. 17.3" monitors at 900 with high end at 1080. I've got a 3 year old laptop with more vertical pixel counts and higher horizontal counts, 1920x1200. Anybody know how to upgrade a 3 year old laptop to the i series processors? Or anybody know how to tell Laptop manufacturers a good laptop has a good monitor and these new ones don't have it. While I'm ranting, these glossy monitors are pitiful, there was a reason for anti-glare and it hasn't gone away.

There are precious few manufacturers making laptop LCDs larger than 1080px in height. You'll have to go with a high-end gaming laptop or a Macbook Pro.

Yep - it piggs me off too. It's all to do with the myth that everyone wants to watch ultra-widescreen movies on their laptops. We now buy MSI gaming laptops as that's the only way to get anything even approaching decent resolution on a 15" machine but even there the aspect ratio is letterbox. It's all a bit crap really.

Well, I sympathize. Just went shopping for a new laptop, and it is a big price jump to get to the 1920x1200. 1080 is widely available. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with price points - that and most, I said most, really don't use 1920x1200. Because of the high price point for a 1920x1200 capable laptop, I elected to get another year or two out of my trust xps1530 - extended the warranty and added a SSD. Zoom zoom. This laptop has a glossy screen, and at first I had some concern, but it really isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, I agree. The whole industry has gone over to the dark side - tailor everything to the entertainment junkies. Why waste vertical space that would leave a black border around those HD videos? Marc

We need some real laptop reviews to put these manufacturers in place on this. People do work with their laptop. People cruise web with their laptops. People play games with their laptops (well they try). I don't see many folks on the train watching movies with their laptops.

it's strange isn't it? I agree with everything you and the earlier responders say - but surely laptop manufacturers aren't just stupid - there's a logical reason - and (presumably) that is that the additional expense of the higher resolution screen is not recouped by sales - also the glossy screens, I think, appeal to people as they look great (Ohhh! Shiny) in the showroom. Certainly they must sell better as they all seem to be doing it! the bottom line is, it's the bottom line!

Tim - I picked up a 256GB SSD a month or so ago from NewEgg. Still waiting on my $40 rebate, but with rebate, it came to $380. Not too bad. I also went from 4GB to 8GB, Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro, 6 cell to 9 cell battery (recommend ebay, don't pay Dell's prices) and extended the warranty one year. Dell has already replaced the motherboard due to the hot graphics chip (I have no idea if they really swapped it ;)). The main issue I was concerned about was application compatibility, and I've found that what does not run under Windows 7 runs very nicely under the XP virtual machine that comes included with Windows 7 Pro. It's a bit spooky - on my left monitor is Xp, on the right Windows 7. So far, it's been very stable. Note: if you use usb to xxx devices, say usb to serial, order new ones now. They *might* work under Windows 7, but I had some serious bad boys that claimed to work but were just dysfunctional. Oh, you won't BELIEVE the performance boost from the SSD - it's just giddy. Since this is my main development platform, I am very serious about backups, so I also bought an external SATA disk imager. Drop the laptop drive into the source slot, the backup drive into the target. An hour later I have a full image backup that I can drop into a safety deposit box. Basically there has been collusion to reduce costs by the manufacturers. It happens a lot in this industry. And unfortunately the lemmings don't know what they are buying. Maybe this will be the final reason to buy a Mac.

having got one 27" max my next machine will definitely be another - the monitor is pure brilliance (although I do have to sit further away when playing FPS games to avoid being sick!)
