Morning! I am thinking of adding a 120gb SSD to my desktop. Is it worth the money? I don't know if it's worth adding one or not. Any suggestions on whether its worth it and if so what sort? Cheers

.... it depends what your priorities are. They are *much* faster than normal drives, the biggest beneift for most useres is to run your OS on them, plus you intensive applications. Whizzing one in isn't going to make much difference without moving the OS, unless you have a lot of file intensive work such as media manipulation and want to dedicate a hard drive for it. You have to weigh up whether the cost is really worth the benefit, you should also look into hybrid drives (an SSD with a standards HDD attached) but I don't know how complicated it is to get Windows & its swap file on to the SDD bit.

I don't know if it's worth the money to you, but I do know it will make your PC dramatically faster. Make it your C:\ drive and move your swap and hibernate files somewhere else. I got one a couple of years ago - best "bang for buck" I've spent in a long time. Nick

Thanks for that. This is the question isn't it can i justify paying 120-130 for a few seconds off load time. I am currently running i7 2600k, 1tb hd ati 6950, 8gb ram - I was either considering adding an ssd drive or another 6950 and an extra 8gb of ram. I am really not sure which would be the best obv the ssd is cheaper than adding the extra graphics card but an extra graphics card would be nice! :)

It's totally worth the bucks. It's faster, fragmentation has no effect on it... I have installed Wewen on it for almost 2 years. It takes BIOS longer then the actual windows load even after 2 years of usage. It's an excellent investment.

          All the best, Dan

Most bang for the buck upgrade in terms of system responsiveness since my first dual core CPU.

Well that is a nice PC, adding an SSD will really boast up you perf! It is not only a couple of seconds improvement here and there, it is an overall feeling that everything just speed up. On loading a large VS solutions, the increment is huge! An OCZ Vertex 3 is a good SSD or a cheaper Crucial m4. Let us now later your experience. Cheers

Trust me, it will change you performance perception more then any other component! If you have 200 € to spend, go with Vertex! Cheers!

I plumped for a cheapo 'hybrid' in my rather lacklustre Acer i5. Rebuilt on the new drive so only c:. Wow what a difference, I can concurrently run several instances of VS2010, along with SQL Manager, SQL server and Lightroom 3, and all the other usual office stuff. Totally rocks. I chose Seagate Momentus 320GB, think I paid £72 from some outfit in the Channel Islands :)
