Say the IT Director of our company is retiring.... What is the best way of angling myself up for Promotion? Im already quite high-profile in the Company for Leading the development of a key online project and work with some key directors already... There are other people in the department (Mostly been there longer than me but I would neccessarily said they have more experience or ability) that are going to start manouvering themselves to be his replacement.. I Already have good connections with 2 key decision making directors in the business.. Just would love to be given the opportunity to give it a go as I feel I have some ideas that could make a real difference Any Ideas?

Talk to the IT Director to recommend you for the position. :)

Here's a thought - instead of "angling", just apply for the position.

Just make sure not to leave any evidence...

How about being qualified for the position, applying for it, and explaining why you are the best candidate? Why do you need an angle?

Now that's just silly talk... Since when does anything work in a straght-forward manner. :)

It's already too late to start being political now. You should have been brown-nosing a long time before the job became available.

I don't know why exactly but I found the whole way you are talking about angling to become a director a touch on the creepy side. It even sounds slightly unethical - why be so underhanded? Why not just put yourself forward - you are going to have to work with the other people so it is probably a good idea that you don't adopt the approach that comes across in your question...

How about saying this to the board as it sounds really straightforward and direct!

Read the second line of my sig below. For sure apply for the job, do your durndest to get it. But be careful how dirty you go about doing it or how many people you outright stab. You might lose the position and one of the ones you did dirty might get it. Guess where that leaves you in a couple of months?

Let's face it, after Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF! Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

If you had any chance of the position you wouldn't need to ask here. Suppose you get the gig. Are we going to have to contribute on a regular basis so that you can perform to a reasonable level?

At some corporate hellholes environments, you always need an angle to move up. The world is not a strict meritocracy. I doubt he'll get any good advice on the forum, though; none of us have any magic answers, and it sounds like he needs confidence more than advice.

The mere fact that you felt compelled to ask the question here shows that you are plainly not ready for the role. If you were ready you would have known how to deal with it and would already have done so without needing to ask for anyone else's advice. Directors take, they don't ask.

Hmmm, I'm wondering why someone who is qualified would work some place where being qualified isn't important, other than short term, interim.

At some corporate hellholes environments, you always need an angle to move up. The world is not a strict meritocracy. I doubt he'll get any good advice on the forum, though; none of us have any magic answers, and it sounds like he needs confidence more than advice.

Which is why I don't work at those types of places ... But I have made a pretty good career cleaning up after people who work in those types of companies.

With the job market as it is, I'm wondering why you are wondering.

Be totally useless, shout at other people a lot, turn up to meetings and sleep in them and book yourself on business trips to exotic locations. Seems to work in my company... ;P

Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...
