I am quite saddened the number of people here who don't know who dmr was. Especially when you consider we're a Unix house with c and c++ development. We also use Java and C# for front-ends; both of which heavily derived from his earlier work.

Just logged in and discovered this. Very saddened by the news. His book "The C Programming Language" (co-authored with Kernigan) was the most definitive and concise book on any computer language I've ever seen. The C Programming Language[^]. I wish I'd kept it but after a hunt, I can't find it anywhere. I used to work in an office just down the road from Bell Labs (which became Lucent) in the Chicago suburbs. Many of the programmers there were ex-Lucent people and some of them had worked with him. Apparently he was a genius, and I don't use the term lightly. Very sad :rose:

In order to acheive fame in the IT industry you need to set standards that last decades (which dmr did). But in order to receive fame for (implying external industries are aware) the IT industry you must sell your soul (ummm.. Not gonna say it).
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.
