A little under 2 hours ago. On Amazon. Seeking Major Tom, by William Shatner. Release date was Oct 11. Barnes and Noble didn't stock it in store.

Imagine a world where someone can honestly say "I own all his albums" about shatner. You live in that world!

Todays XKCD[^] - the mouseover text got me to thinking: When did you last buy a music CD? For me, it's got to be about seven years ago (pressie for Michelle), and I can't think of anyone I know who has bought one more recently (not and admits it, anyway). So why do shops still stock them?

My dad buys a lot of audio books on CD. My missus buys CDs too for the car, I have a 4 gig memory stick stuck in the back of the car stereo with anything I want to listen to on it (currently The 12th Man[^]. It is a mixture of albums ripped from CDs I bought many years ago and stuff downloaded from the internet. Bought my daughter a CD player for Christmas last year (along with a disco ball) and she has a number of CDs for it. I like CDs, too young for the vinyl era (because my mum and dad didn't have a record player), so I still remember the excitement of getting them, when and where, reading the booklets that came with them. I recently listened through my entire CD collection, one a day driving to work, but I cannot remember the last time I actually bought one for myself. Next time I do buy one will hopefully be this[^]. I have been looking for one to become available at a price I could afford for about 10 years.

I bought some just last month and I am currently awaiting my new order. Actually that even has a 7" vinyl in it! Also have one pre-ordered which will be out november 11th. I buy both new and 2nd hand, but only at reasonable prices (which, for me, is usually 10 euro or less depending on the CD) :) I also buy my DVD's (no Blu-Rays, much more expensive for the same movie!). I know of very little people who buy DVD's/Blu-Rays or CD's too. Everyone just downloads... For me having the real deal is just so much better! :)

I don't buy music, not digitally either. And I don't even pirate it, I don't listen to music.

Well, the last one I bought was probably about 4 weeks ago. CD's are great for old fuddy-duddies like me who still have CD players.

Ironically, some recordstores are starting to sell vinyl again and rightly so. I liked CD's, until they start breaking. The whole point of a CD was to make music distribution cheaper, but thanks to the greedy music industry the exact opposite happened. Now that it's obsolete I wouldn't mind to see it die, as long as I can still get my vinyl. The entire ritual of putting on a record and the damp-sparky sound when the needle hits the record has a unique charm. And a vinyl lasts for 40 years and more if you take good care of them. And most importantly, music produced and mastered in a real analog studio sounds greater on vinyl. It doesn't matter how many scientific papers you throw at my head, it just does.

I still buy them quite regularly. If you are buying a dl album from play they usually come in around 6-7.99 but if it is an old album you can often get the cd for 3.50 and just rip it.

I routinely buy them, probably 20 or more year. I usually buy from Amazon, since there aren't any music stores anymore. Even Best Buy only stocks top 40 dreck. I prefer CD's so that I can rip the material at whatever bitrate I prefer for the device I'm using. I've bought MP3's from iTunes, Amazon, and other sources, but the rip's are often of inferior quality. Low bitrates, truncated tracks, and so on. It also probably has something to do with the fact that I'm an increasingly grumpy old fuck, and like having something tangible when my money leaves my wallet.

It's has been a while. Most music i buy these days are not released on CD anyway, or in such small quantity that it's impossible to find.
