I am planning on taking the wife and children to Cologne for Christmas this year and I am looking for any accommodation recommendations (hotel, villas etc) - looking for 3 or 4 * level. Any to look at, avoid like the plague?

Is this like a split level here in America?

Just updated post to make a littler clearer - I meant 3 or 4 *, however the prices for 5* hotels for the week we are planning on going are cheap and their trip advisor ratings are very good too

When I am in that area, I usually stay at my parent's home and usually do into a small pub with my father, which definitely is the best place to stay :) Ok, that probably did not help you very much.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
          And it came worse.

Why? Why would you want to do that? Don't you like your family? :)

Could I suggest having a look at renting a small apartment ? it might be cheaper and more accommodating with children than staying in a hotel and having to eat out at every meals.

I lived and worked in Klein Basel for a couple of years and so we used to travel around Germany a bit, but never made it as far as Cologne, so we thought we'd give a go this year as is supposed to be really nice.
