According to this news report: http://www.klfy.com/story/15717759/second-hand-dealer-law[^] It's now illegal to use cash to buy 2nd-hand items. The law is supposed to target crimials that sell stolen goods be creating a paper trail of the transaction. The absurd part? It's a law that targets criminals, who, by their very nature, ignore the law. Like restrictions on gun ownership/carrying, these kinds of laws don't do anything but further infringe on law-abiding citizens rights and freedoms.

There has been some noises about this in the UK, specifically for buying scrap metal.

Barter with silver coins? ---edit--- It does start the process (pressure) of an underground economy (grey market) where items are bought and sold via barter. Perhaps using a silver double eagle representing $32 equivalent. Or more likely people ignoring the law or frequenting garage sales over brick and mortor concession shops.

Al Capone was convicted of tax evasion. There was another major criminal who they tried to go after in a similar fashion but it turned out he had declared all of his illegal earnings. I can't remember who that was... so sometimes, as a criminal, it pays to obey the law. Or something.

Shops are not likely to ignore the law. The criminals get top dollar only from shops. They will follow the law, reducing the transaction of stolen goods. However, this is probably not the real reason for the law, IMO. I think that the state feels like it needs to get more revenue and that a lot of cash transactions tend to get "lost" by these types of businesses and not reported to IRS and the state.

Yeah, when laws are made like this one, they tend to get ignored by everyone. Thus turning us all into "criminals". Such a stupid law. And probably unconstitutional.

Agreed. But, try telling that to many state and city offices which will only accept a credit card or a check.
