My run in with the Occupy folks this weekend.
-
So, Friday night I was out celebrating at a fine punk/metal establishment and there were protesters there trying to enjoy themselves. It's funny, but here in Chicago, it seems a lot of the occupiers are out-of-towners (look and act like tourists). A man with a "No Hippies" shirt started giving them shit, but nothing major happened between them. Shortly after this, someone opened a gas line outside the machine shop next door. Firemen hurried over and sealed it off. Didn't see the occupiers there any more after that. Not saying they did it, but it is at least a coincidence. Sunday night, I went to a local open mic and 2 protesters were signed up in the top 2 spots, well, let's just say, they should probably be banned from speaking for the movement. Both guys identified themselves as out-of-towners that "tour" with the movement and are "crashing" in Chicago. Both guys started out preaching about the movement and after a minute almost got led off the stage, then each one went into a completely offensive, sexist, and even racist unoriginal joke parade. Referring to the 3 women in the room as vaginas is the worst way to win over a crowd. I don't care about the message, but I can't wait for winter when they all leave.

The open mic protesters sound like a rather nasty couple of individuals - I think you guys were very patient with them...

Hmm, just don't assume that all of the Occupy protests are the same... The movement is pretty loosely-defined, so maybe some of the occupations in other cities are just doing it as an excuse to be annoying, instead of actually in solidarity with OWS's ideals. Regardless, I've been to the OWS protest a couple times now, and I was quite impressed.
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)Bunch of tossers quite frankly, protesting by adversely affecting institutions against which they are not in fact protesting, (i.e., as Nagy pointed out, St Pauls). Oh, and by loosely defined I assume you mean they haven't got a clue what they're doing...

A protest is SUPPOSED to be disruptive. It's supposed to get peoples' attention, and you don't do that by quietly sitting in the corner. And they know exactly what they're doing... They've intentionally refused to issue a list of specific demands, as that would start excluding people from the movement. This isn't "We want X, Y, and Z! Give it to us and we'll go home."... This is "We're as mad as hell, and we're not going to take it anymore!" [^] Now, maybe the protest up in London is a joke, and maybe it's not... I haven't seen it. But the one in NYC is VERY organized, VERY committed, and VERY serious.

Does that mean they are going to stop taking the handouts that are paid for with my taxes. Yes, I'm mad as hell, at all these lazy wasters who think they somehow have a grievance against the rest of us, who pay for them to sit around on their lazy arses all day and go off to the pub and then their comfortable homes at night. If they want to make the world a better place then they should start making a contribution to it.

Actually, according to a survey done a couple weeks ago, about 85% of them have jobs... So yes, 15% of them are unemployed, but given the national unemployment rate, that's not very surprising.

What about the video where they are learning the chants of their demands? I believe one of the last items on their list was to be allowed to have sex with animals.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)I get the impression from here and else where that people don't like being inconvenienced with other people's right to protest. I even go as far as to say that when things are fine for someone they tend to care nothing for the plight of others. Since the people here complain about it like they're just a bunch of pot smoking hippies, they miss the point that they're trying to make it known the problems with Wall Street are still here. Society never needed big business to prosper or invent the things we have today. They got that way to dominate, sustain dominance and make money for the people in charge. They don't exist to create jobs, products or services. They do it all for the money and that's it.
