I wonder if you are compensating for the tools down under.

The second reply that builds on the 'tools down under'... it seems that men always refer to those when someone seems bragging. I sincerely do not think I am compensating; my post was only about the REAL advantage in developing with many monitors and how that could be done. There are always other men with more monitors and/or tools than yourself...

I have a 6 monitors setup, because I am developing an IDE that manages a 3D output window and everything is in c++ with VisualStudio. So I need to have a 3D window, my IDE and the VS IDE. Lots of stuff. I really enjoy it and next workstation will have 12 monitors. It is not too much, you can really use the space when you work seriously. I found that the Matrox "triple head to go" allows connection of 3 monitors at only one DVI output, so my 6 monitors system is powered by a standard dual output video card. Since there are 4 outputs video cards, next workstation will have 12 monitors, and I'm sure I will use all of them.

Do you really need 12, or are you just modifying the way you work to spread your open windows across as many screens as possible?

If you have enough open processes to use an aggregate of that many screens' use of space (I do, and more, probably), there's not really any limit on how many screens makes things better. Visible windows are better than hidden ones and having to alt-tab. And the more space you have the more possible it is to arrange your windows in semantic groups so you can remember where you put them; with only two screens all my windows and groups get overlaid and their location has no real meaning.

My system here has 4 1920x1080 23" monitors. I actually have a business need for it, as one of the apps I am developing for my company has a main control panel (or windows app) that uses the others for various screens throughout a hall. But, now having 4 of them active all the time makes it REAL easy for development now. I can have IM open on one screen, visual studio on one screen, and two others for web browsing - definitely a plus when trying to figure out how to program something! By the way, Windows 7 does play nice with mixed video cards, as I have 1 ATI and 1 NVIDIA card in this box. That didn't use to be the case, but it is now. Thankfully....

Yes, I really would use 12 monitors. there are times I feel 6 define a too small surface. But I know it is not a standard situation: I have two IDEs and many sources plus documents (many from photoshop that takes space too) that I have to cut from.

I used to have a two/four monitor setup and would always miss an incoming email or IM. I had to constantly be looking at the other monitor to see if I have some notifications. I use a 14 inch laptop now, single screen and I am able to get more code done than before, I can see the notifications and either take a look or ignore it. It also allows me to code without a distraction or take a minute and check email and browse. One productive job at a time. I still have a dual monitor attached to my docking station, I use that only when I am trying to verify something in the application with the database or while profiling something.
