Short-term web programming jobs seem to pay the most for this field of work round this part of the country. They typically last about three months and they pay about £20 an hour 40h/w. Whilst that isn't especially high for the job once you get into a city like London, in this small part of the world that is about 80% more than the normal paying wage for a full time job in this field. I haven't been looking at the other fields so I can't talk about them, sorry.

Yeah, that's what it's all about - money and respect. Personally I prefer to be able to respect myself. Who cares what other people think ? I program because I love it, it makes me more money than most people I know, but it's more important to me that I look forward to work. If you offered to double my salary for a job I hated, I'd laugh at you. Actually, I'm already laughing. dot com is bust ? What does that mean ? You don't want to work much, you want lots of money and you want respect ? I'd probably try to get a job as the Queen, or the Pope. If you are not doing something you like, you will not be dedicating yourself to something that others will respect you for. Most will be good paying if you are good and not if you are just getting by. If you want money become a lawyer. If you want respect do not. "I will find a new sig someday."

As someone that has been Programming as a Career for 5 years now, I have to say that I'm ready for a career change. Don't get me wrong, I love coding, but I'm burnt out on working on other peoples software. I don't have time to work on my own stuff anymore, and if I quit my job to have time, I would be on the street seeing as how I'm the sole bread winner. Anyway, just think carefully about what you want to do. I think I may try to get a teaching job at a community college or something. The programming courses at the local one here are not very good and totally void of anyone with real world experience. Jason Gerard qeou kai kurios Iasou Cristou doulos

Forget respect...Money and respect don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. Lawyers come to mind. At the end of the day the only thing (of the two choices) that matters is that, in your mind, you made enough money for the work you did. Enjoying your work is nice, but in the end maybe not the most important requirement. I have had jobs that paid well, but I have not enjoyed and I have had jobs that I have enjoyed, but not paid well. I have yet to have a job that paid well and that I have enjoyed. I have found, for me anyway, that it is not important to have respect or enjoy my work. The most important thing is that my job pays well enough to allow me to do all of the non-work related things I want to do. To some people job security is important, but it usually involves a choice between money and security. Just my two cents worth. Gary Kirkham A working Program is one that has only unobserved bugs I thought I wanted a career, turns out I just wanted paychecks

If you are looking for respect then I'd stay out of the IT world. We don't get much respect apart from within our own ranks. Don't look for the job that gives you the most money, look for the one that you can enjoy doing - enjoying your work is the most important thing as you'll probably spend a large percentage of your life doing it. Figure out what you like to do. If you pick a career based on some "objective" measurement of money, fame, prestige, etc but you don't like it, you'll be miserable and end up looking for a new career in a few years (or worse: spend your life doing a job you hate). Sure, a doctor may be "objectively" better (based on money, presitge, etc), but you may actually love a job that has a low "objective" score. Remember: you'll be spending a lot more time working than you will be spending money. Why spend the majority of your time doing something you dislike in order to spend a minority of your time doing something you like (i.e. spending money)? Additionally, some jobs which are rated "objectively" high because they have good pay. Why do they have good pay? Because people don't like to do them. Hence, an "objectively" high-scoring job is sometimes correlated with a subjectively bad job. I think accounting falls into this category. Pay has gone up quite a bit for accountants, but I wouldn't want to do it (and neither do most people), which is why it's a well-paying job. ------------------------------------------ "Isn't it funny how people say they'll never grow up to be their parents, then one day they look in the mirror and they're moving aircraft carriers into the Gulf region?" - The Onion
