Actually that's because humans tend to correct mistakes unconsiously while reading. A few years ago a mail was sent around that contained words where only the first and last letters where in the correct place. That text is still (more or less) readable. for example: Hi tehre tihs stecnene has been sihtcewd aonurd and sltil rdeablae. (or almost ;-))
