Well I was at the security check. The officer asked to see my liquid containers, I got distracted and I left my laptop in one of the trays when leaving. I remembered about not putting it back in my bag only just after take off. A bit too late.

I was already wondering what the encryption is all about on the notebook I found today at the airport ;P  Where did you leave it? I don't assume you'll get it back. My Mrs. Wife lost her music, mobile, money etc some time ago - I fetched the passport right the next day from lost&found...

At security check. That's why I still hope I can get it back.

Yes, but I gave up after a 10 minute wait. I filed a request on the website, at any rate that there are no found items yet for Nov 1st and 2nd, but only for up to Oct 31st, and in fact it's stated that it takes up to 72 hours for collected items to be handed to the L&F office, which then files them.

"Vital" data is encrypted with TrueCrypt, so even with access to my user account, an attacker would have to brute force his way into the encrypted volume. Good luck with that. For less important data I use native NTFS encryption, which seems lame but in fact it's a good way to prevent access to the data even by removing the hard disk. Of course, it's based on your Windows user name and password, so the password must be rock solid and unique (and you must avoid storing the recovery information on the same machine - I don't store it at all).

I have a tool that runs in the PE on windows machines. It will remove user passwords with a click of the button. I use it occasionally here at work for an old machine that nobody remembers the password on or when a person quits and leaves without giving the password on the laptops or some such thing. It has never failed to work on xp, vista or weven. Its not a matter of guessing the password, its a matter of simply removing it. granted your average Joe probably does not have this, but just saying its out there. That being said, once the password is removed I have no clue how the encryption would/would not work after that.

Let's face it, after Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF! Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Uhm, good to know. Luckily the machine has no DVD drive, and you cannot boot from USB, nor enter the BIOS.

Silly me, I've left my notebook at the airport. I just hope the lost&found office finds it because it was almost new. Luckily, the chance of someone guessing my password is very low because it's super complex, at any rate for good measure I just changed lots of passwords between yesterday night and today. Funnily enough, changing the Code Project password does not seem to terminate other open sessions, which is very bad. All of the vital data is encrypted anyway, so there should be no problems, even if someone manages to remove the SSD. Being paranoid helps. In hindsight, anyway, I would have encrypted much more stuff, just to be 100% safe.

They may have blown it up in case it was a bomb. :~ I knew a guy who stuck a big picture of himself on his laptop along with a "This laptop belongs to ____" message.

LOL that was my first thought. I expected to land and find the police waiting for me. :-D No really, it seems that a ton of things are lost or abandoned every day, so I guess it's pretty routine.
