Women participants in the lounge?
-
Are there any active women participants in the Lounge? Or is it only we men who have a funny bone? ;P

Corinna, Leckey, Ali, Elaine, Anna-Jayne, Smitha. And of course Joan (who is in fact a man, but that's a secret).

Very few. Why not hire few chicks to counter this imbalanced sex ratio in the lounge. Their full time responsibility would be to cheer for the loungers. :-O
Starting to think people post kid pics in their profiles because that was the last time they were cute - Jeremy.

Well, I might ask the question another way: (and not nearly pithily-wittily-zenly as your way of asking it) ... ... is it only (we) men who create virtual locker-rooms reeking of machismo testo-sweat, frequent references to weapons, and fantasias of weapon-play embodying a certain homeo-erotic or masturbatory phallic-sensuality, homicide, frequent denigration of other cultures, religions, gender-orientations, and races, crude wink-wink-nudge sexual jokes focused on female breasts and sexual organs, and boasting which is the verbal equivalent of male-dominance display in gorillas by chest-pounding and screaming ? mmm ... did I leave out ritually sadistic "gauntlet-running" for newcomers who stumble in and ask the wrong kind of question ? And what about vendettas ? Now, if it were the case that the Lounge is even vaguely-gnarly-reflected in the fun-house-mirror of the above pseudo-Einsteinian-gedanken-as-channeled-through-Groucho-Marx-and-Camille-Paglia, and if there is a basis for the assumption that most technically competent women, who might be logical candidates for participation in the Lounge, have essentially "better tastes" than an urge to wallow in the still-mushy striated alluvial deposits of ancient-to-fresh coprolites ... Well you draw (as you will, and as you must) ... your own conclusion. I like the Lounge, and enjoy it ! ... la vie humaine ... has equally merde and transcendence ? Diamonds there be in the slurry ! Up to chest-level extra-heavy waders, or Haz-Mat suits, useful. :) best, Bill

Elaine left us, didn't she? Or is she back?

Alas not.

I know you probably aren't aware of it but that statement was incredibly patronising, sexist and crass. It's precisely this attitude that has driven the female contingent away. I am sure they face bias and sexism in real life, so they don't need to encounter it here.

They are already there[^]. They just need to participate a bit more. Chris, could you bring that into CP Staff's objectives for 2012 ?

Lauren ! I knew someone was missing, it was her. ( Lauren, Leppie and Leckey are the ones I always mistake ).

Ouch you took it in the most serious way one can take. That was meant in a very light tone.

Perhaps you might want to consider the joke icon next time so that misunderstandings are avoided.

People need to stop being so damn sensitive, politically correct and hypocrtical. If you for one minute think, you would'nt get statements that are patronising, sexist or crass, if the the posts were dominated by females. I would have to say, that you need to wake up, and smell the roses. Women can be just as vulgar, condescending, insensitive, etc as men. As far as I am concerned, if the girls want to play with the boys then they need to accept the way boys are and vice versa. Having said this, it does not mean, that we should not be polite and considerate to other members feelings. It means if a light hearted comment comes along, that might be interpreted as crass, patronizing or politically incorrect by some, then don't get your panties in a twist, see it for what it is, a joke.

First, the programming industry's male-to-female ratio has always been overwhelmingly weighted towards males. I've met exactly two female programmers in my 30-year career. One was only doing it until they hired me, and the other had been moved into the position "to see if she could handle it". I personally treated them like programmers first, and women second. Other coworkers not only treated them like women first, but they treated them like they were stupid BECAUSE they were women. This was the primary reason they were either looking for non-programming jobs, or happy to hand the job to someone else. There are many more female system admins than there are female programmers (I know two right at the moment). I don't understand why it's so important to know how many female programmers there are on CP. I know of three or four that WERE here, and that one of them recently requested that her account be deleted because of some of the people here. So, grow up and mind your own business.
