Better than what
Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Better than trying to have a meaningful conversation with my ex-wife. Better than Visual Studio Service Pack 1. Better than Windows Vista. Better than VB (of course, ANYTHING is better than VB, so I wouldn't blame him for not wanting to state the obvious).

Better at showing us that the web browser can indeed handle errors regarding the server being down. Better at giving us an opportunity to illustrate that a "free" server is just a cheap way of saying "I don't want to pay my own way". Better at wasting space on the internet. Better at edging you closer to your ISPs bandwidth cap for no apparent benefit. I could go on, but I'm bored now...

Well, you gave it a lot more thought than most of us. I hope the OP appreciates these words of wisdom. ;)

PageMoon is a better bet than any other homepage
Better than what and better at what? Firstly, the current page is not accessible (server problem?), secondly the Google cached copy is just a list of websites, most of which I am never likely to visit, and the rest I already have in my favourites.

I'd say it might be better at predicting what is in a user's favorites than most portal portals. :-D

of course it is, but do you know of a portal that holds more of your favorites (and isn't made by you)? :)

No, but why do I need one when my browser holds all my favourites?

one might be using different browsers and/or different computers, even in different places; that is when a web-based portal (or home page) may come in handy. FWIW: I don't use such portals, nor favorites; I have a local html file with over 1000 links; and I synchronize it amongst my machines. :)

Yes, I've seen portals before but never found them useful, since almost 100% of my computing time is done on my own system, where everything is at hand.

I didn't mean this post to be an advert. Adding CP to PageMoon eased me in navigating to CP everyday, so just thought of sharing it in Lounge. Certainly there are no ads in PageMoon rather.

I have CP on my bookmarks bar, as well as my Chrome homepage (which is the New Page tab). I don't have to wait for any website before I can get to the ones I use most often. In fact, my Bookmarks bar is organised with a couple of direct links, then folders for the less frequent stuff - so I am never more than three menu clicks from any low-security site that I visit regularly. (The high security stuff has the URL and access detail in an encrypted archive since they all have different, strong passwords)

Thanks, indeed as OriginalGriff felt, my avatar and profile did look like advert at first instance. Now had changed the avatar and other stuff.

I add my most permanent favorites to my web site so that if I my machine ges sideways at home, I don't have to worry about recovering them.

Because I couldn't leave well enough alone, and added the JSOP flourish at the end of the message. It was a low-rep user that down-voted, so it could have been Mr. Technical himself.

When you've exhausted all other possibilities, the least likely is probably the answer.
