If ever a toy is destined to go into the scrapbook of toys past, it is Etch a Sketch. It was a 1960's fondle slab that was returned to factory settings by inverting and applying an oscillating motion. But it was a one trick pony, no wifi, no email etc. But... I think it would be a mistake to get rid of it. How else do I make thermite?

      Very, very, carefully...

Not at all, thermite is very stable and very difficult to ignite.

Not really. A dollop of potassium permanganate (available from plumbers supply houses or Ace Hardware) topped with a few drops of drug store glycerin does the job nicely. :)

Well of course, (I use magnesium ribbon), I meant in the normal way of things. A match won't do it.

Doesn't the thermite leave a strange metallic after-taste in the bacon ?

Filings from aluminium pipe, then burn many, many ferromagnetic tape bands and powder the residue. On a side note I too prefer magnesium fusing. //L
