Our car, the famed reliable Opel Zafira, is of the dock-side seamstress persuasion. Totally and utterly [REDACTED]. We have decided to burn the pile of crap replace it with something a bit more reliable. I was thinking about the Volvo XC90, but it is allegedly worse then the Zafira. So, do any of you drive a large people carrier, we want a six seater, that you think is reliable and would recommend.

I have seen few BMW X6 on road. It looks good to me. Not really sure about. You can buy that and if you do not like it, feel free to ship it to India. I will bear 9.99% of shipping charges. That's the best deal you can get. :)

Had many Toyotas: utterly reliable. The LandCruiser was the biggest (7 seater) when we did school runs and so forth. Excellent piece of kit.

Toyota Fortuner is also a good option if you want something a tad cheaper. Just not the most stable towing vehicle, especially with a heavier load.

Until early this year, I had a Shogun diesel - 7 seats, loads of space, in the seven years I had it (and it wasn't new then) I had one flat tire, and a blown oil seal on the diesel pump (even then it got me home - slowly - in a sequence of half mile bursts). Very reliable, but the fuel consumption was rather heavy at ~20mpg!

20 mpg? Did you have an oil well? This is what Wikipedia writes about my car (which can only seat four people): "...1.2 TDI model can be as low as just over 2 litres per 100 kilometres (140 mpg-imp; 120 mpg-US). This version of the Audi A2 won the "Nordic Eco Run" fuel economy race in 2003, with a consumption of 2.62 L/100 km (107.8 mpg-imp; 89.8 mpg-US)"

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
        And it came worse.

I wish! 2.8l engine, but built like a tank (and with similar weight). Comfortable, but you could get a coal-bunker full of coal in the back and it didn't even notice. The cost of diesel when I bought it was a lot lower...

We thought about a Peugeot a few cars back; might be worth another look.

We had a Peugeot 807 Pullman Eventhough it was a nice car to drive it was expensive to maintain, and we always needed to wait for spares to be imported from France. In the first year we had to replace the catalytic converter, the throttle housing, the CO2 sensor, the oxygen sensor, the tyre pressure sensors and the automatic windscreen wiper sensor. The car spent a total of 4 months at the dealers for repairs, that year. The built quality was also not the best. The car came factory fitted with 3 sunroofs and all three leaked. If I ever had to opt for a french car again I would choose a Renault, they seem to be better built. But then again I will never buy a French car again. Since you are considering the XC90, you should also have look at the BMW X5.

To be honest, 2 litres/100 km is not what you reach in every day use, but 3L/100 km is realistic. With my tiny 20L tank I can still go over 600km. Not bad for a car that is now 10 years old.

Whereas I discovered that Tesco won't let you buy more than ~120 euros of fuel without paying for it and going back for more... 93l tank(!)

See, everything is in proportion: Roughly five times the fuel consumption and also five times the size of the tank :)
