I had to buy a 1TB WD drive recently and was befuddled about price, now I know the rest of the story. Befuddled...I love that word and use it whenever I can. :)

I'm sure the floods in Thailand were engineered by the SSD manufacturers so that their prices would seem more competitive with standard HDs...

Funny read. Well atleast for me it was. I use to work for one of the companies that got flooded. They make the suspension arms and flexures for them. Hardly a conspiracy. Reality is the top of the org is a bunch of bobble heads that got sold a bushel of lemons. Most of us in this area (where their HQ is located), think it is a sign of the end. Granted maybe the big players like Seagate will make some minor profit of it... But truth is those players even during the recession were making hand over fist. Look back at the last couple years and see the buy outs that happend. Thats correct. In the midst of a recession they were seeing record profits and buying out compeitors (Seagate and WD both). While at the same time the componet manufacturers were continually in the red and continually making cuts just to survive. Just because Seagate and WD squeeze a few pennies out of it doesn't not mean they planned it. They are massive companies and funtion as any would. They got screwed by floods and they will screw over every one because of it. I mean what are you going to do about it. Not buy an HDD when your PC crashes? Sure you can all switch to solid state, but what do you think will happen to that market then? Solid state can not handle the output that HDD makes. The price jumps are a temporary bump as happens in any market when the supply is temporarily cut.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

Clickety[^] Very interesting read though, now that more is known about what happened and is now happening.

A few weeks ago I saw a sign at Microcenter "Due to recent shortages we must limit hard drive purchases to one per customer" It was at the checkout, and most purchasers were unaware of any shortage and started thinking it was a typo/hoax/joke.
