Just had a first look at Google Wallet, which sounded interesting until I read this on Wikipedia: "Google will make money from this by offering sponsored ads to their users. The new app Google Shopper[12]will push on your phone:" I am really starting to hate the advertising industry. They seem to be single mindedly trying to destroy the internet so that it's impossible to use without getting hammered by subliminal advertising. They're driving down developer wages by offering a business model that supports giving software away. And now they want to advertise to you while your actually being a good consumer and buying stuff. Good on Wikipedia for not giving in to this parasite of an industry.

While I agree with you (I consider the advertising industry marginally better than recruiters) I don't see an alternative business model for a lot of apps that rely on high volume low value and neither do the thinkers in this field. I can't imagine one of the bright sparks at Google deciding to go the ad route if there was a viable alternative that meant NOT getting in your customers face with crap whenever possible.

Thing is though I can't see any upside for the user. Comes the day I can use Google Wallet and get a percentage discount on the transaction over using a credit card, I'll reconsider. But at present, I'll still need to carry a credit card, it'll just mean another advert in my face. I'm not totally against the advertising business model. If I get a free app, I can expect that but when people start complaining that $15 is too much for an app! An app that saves them hours of time every week, you got to wonder. Maybe VS2012 could come with a hardware device that dispenses a little tray of peanuts every time you write 20 lines of code that compiles without a warning :-D

You are way too generous, smellivision and the whiff banana is more likely. I have to admit for utility products I do chase around and look for a freebie before resorting to paid tools. I recently chased down an MKV2VOB freebie that I will happily use. If it eventually makes a home for itself on my machine I usually make a donation or upgrade. An ISO creator on the other hand gets used so rarely I am loathe to pay for it. I do wander around in some really weird TShirts as a consequence!

Did you have a specific app in mind when you posted that. I suspect there are any number of apps that might be considered to 'waste' hours worth of time every week but I can't recall any that would actually save that much time.

Hi jschell, The company I work for develops mobile apps for tradesmen, the construction industry and also Agricultural. On one occasion a user emailed us and told us how much time it saved them ever week but would refuse to pay for it again on "principle". They thought an app that cost $50 and saved them ~4 hours a week was too much.

Only starting to. I think mine first started with the fact that paying for cable is paying for ads, much like Hulu. I'm not going to pay for ads if I can help it. I don't watch cable for this reason.
