No surprise there :-D Just FYI, In 1940 the Foreign Legion was figthing in Narvik[^], in Norway, winning there perhaps the only allied victory of 1940 against Germans. They never stopped to fight during all WWII, being in the first to rally the Free French Forces. The tradition of the Legion is not to win anytime, it's to never give up, and never surrender if necessary. The emblematic battle of the Legion is a defeat, the battle of Camerone[^] At least you will learn something new today ;)

Like the british in Sierra Leone, which resulted in open elections for the first time in (I think) 15 years. Plus, african troops were involved in supporting the british troops so it is helping to develop african NATO forces, so its not just westerners doing peacekeeping. The tigress is here :-D
Mr. Kabbah, current president of Sierra Leone, re-elected last year, was elected for the first time in 1996 (less than 7 yrs. ago). He was removed by a golpe lead by JP Koroma, the chief of the RUF (the party who committed the worst atrocities during the war). There are no African countries in NATO and most of westerners military activities in Africa was targeted to protect western people and interests (like in Liberia or in Congo) most of the foreign soldiers that did peacekeeping in African countries came from other African countries (Nigeria in Sierra Leone and Liberia) or "third world" countries (Pakistan or Malaysia) and sometimes were not so "neutral"... -- Looking for a new screen-saver? Chris Austin wrote: it truly to prevent a larger de-stabilization in the region? Or, are they playing the parts of pawns for some political favor? The two are possible.IMHO the truth is in between, no state do something for nothing. However AFAIK, the french troops avoid for the moment a bloody civil war, and a greater destabilization of Western Africa, involving Liberia and Burkina-Faso. Perhaps do Africans CPians have more info on this? Chris Austin wrote: how does the general public feel about this in France Strangly there's quiet always a global consensus on our foreign policy, whatever the government. I've never heard yet a mediatic figure protesting against our troops in Africa, whatever the country where they have to fight. The last controverse I can remember was about the Gulf War (part 1), but we didn't lead the coalition :)

In Ivory Coast, "Rebels" attack French troops[^]. Result: 0-30. Attacking troops from the Foreign Legion shows a high degree of courage or of unconsciousness

So, 0.34 - 30 would be a more correct figure? :-D -- Only in a world this shitty could you even try to say these were innocent people and keep a straight face.

Yep, to be in a history book. Personaly I think sometimes it may be wiser to forgive, just to have the possibility to try again

KaЯl wrote: Personaly I think sometimes it may be wiser to forgive, just to have the possibility to try again Never. If you have a reputation (not to mention the people able to do such a thing) of fighting to the death no matter how bleak the horizon then you will be taken very seriously indeed by your opposers, and the moral boost you'll get from winning will be incredible. The trick is to not enter situations where the horizon is so bleak you know you wont stand *any* chance of winning - that is just stupidity and has never worked (respect is useless if you have no one left to be respected).
