Natrural (or non-surgical) remedies for Abscess

I have a large salivary gland (or tooth) abscess in my mouth. Yesterday morning it looked like I was growing a second head, but after some very pleasant seepage over the afternoon, I now have a merely swollen cheek. The GP's first option yesterday was to send me to a hospital for drainage, but as I have no medical aid (insurance), this would involve a lengthy wait in a queue at a dreaded 'government hospital', and possibly less than top treatment. Today the abscess is still very present, but I can't help believing it can be managed non-surgically from here on. Does anyone have any experience in this regard, or could maybe recommend some reading for me to pursue or more natural home treatment of this lump in my face please?

Thank you Richard, but I am capable of distinguishing non-medical advice that could possibly be harmful from that which may be merely therapeutic. Using a string with a slamming door to extract the tooth and chewing garlic as a topical antibiotic are examples, respectively.

The bleeding heart capitalists are scared. We actually have a pretty good system already, but most middle class people are so sold on the expensive protection offered by private medical aids that they must oppose any further taxation to improve the state system. However, when it comes to having a lower molar extracted, I also tend to be a bit fussy. And scared.

even if you could aspirate (drain) it yourself, with a sterile needle and syringe, you still really need a course of antibiotics dude ... 'g'

I am on the last day of a 5 day course of 2 grams Augmentin twice daily, and the swelling has already reduced to less than half. Time to commence some probiotics though.

if (or as a maths prof wrote it 'iif' meaning if and only if) you could get a sterile needle (medium bore) and syringe, and find where to put it, you could drain it (yeah, I know, you asked for non-surical) .. your problems are, amongst other things, not introducing more infection - the mouth is full of it unfortunately rather than the hospital, how about a dentist ? 'g'

In a few days my cash flow will have improved enough to visit a private dentist, which I look forward to doing. I f the Blob is going down I can afford a short wait.

well, you can use oil of cloves (topical) for pain and/or panadeine - gargle with salt water or mouth-cleaner eg listerine as often as you can to reduce the nasties in your mouth 'g'

Funny enough - except in the beginning, last week - the pain has been quite easy to manage. Slightly higher than recommended, but still safe doses of paracetamol and codeine every six hours seem quite effective. I'm going to hammer on the anti-bacteria front though, with mouthwashes and an extremely high garlic diet, plus saturation levels of vitamin C. I must say, after four days of minimum solids by mouth and the antibiotics I feel pretty damned healthy though. Thought I'd be a bit down.

Its most likely due to the fact that my cousins always perform shows here and insist on having their birthday parties here. I swore off this place last year when that guy got stabbed in the bathroom and his guts were coming out. Not the best first impression I've ever had. That incident alone was enough for me to stay away from this crazy place. It's a pretty standard bar and I gave it an extra star because the staff is terribly nice. It would be better if the clientele wasn't so ghetto. It'd be best to just stay away and go to another bar. Unfortunately for moi, I'm stuck coming here until my cousins come to thier senses and stop playing shows here. The job search, well, I'm still not working so not that great. I've had a few interviews, turned one down because the amount of travel was too much for me. But it seems pretty difficult to get an interview without knowing someone to pass along your resume. Another thing is that my experience is mostly in C# Winforms, and most jobs that want ASP don't think I can do that, too.

Receding nicely, thank you. I'm hoping dental hyper-cleaning and a very high garlic and vitamin C diet to boost the immune system will get things right eventually.
