Aparently a new batch of emails have turned up on the net from the global warming bridage: http://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2011/11/22/breaking-news-foia-2011-has-arrived/[^] "I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run. <1611> Carter:" "I too don’t see why the schemes should be symmetrical. The temperature ones certainly will not as we’re choosing the periods to show warming. <1219> Trenberth:" The truth will out! Goodbye GW, it was fun taking the piss, I shall miss you. :)

So are CFLs ruining your life too? Have you started a petition to use more electricity so you can have your incandescent bulbs back? That must be a conspiracy too.

It looks as if Bio Diversity is the next eco-scare-brick-bat. Have to say AGW lasted well. Acid Rain didnt run more than a few years before people realised it was a con. Before that the population time bomb, that fizzled out, and even further back it was Global Cooling, due to CO2 would you believe. That didnt really seem to catch on either. But AGW proved to be a stubborn one to uproot. :)

CFL's are the low powered lamps that leach toxic substances like mercury into the ground, and therefore the water table. These are the bulbs that are more energy intensive to produce and actually create more CO2 than conventional ones. They also cost more, requiring more work to be done by the consumer in order to afford them, whilst the claims of their working life have been shown to be completely at odds with reality.

I don't have any refs but someone told be those bad boys are one of the current leading causes for house fires. He had a fire in his house (not sure what the cause was for him), and the fire marshal asked him if they use CFL bulbs. The marshal went on to explain if used upside down (i.e. the Bulb is pointing downwards), the connector heats up and explodes the CFL. Sometimes it is not even noticed because the connector will continue to 'glow'. It is however glowing due to extreme heat (not florecence gases), and will eventually start on fire. Also, isn't disposal kind of a pain in the ass? I mean sure it is more 'efficient', but for most lazy asses out there who toss it in the trash are we actually helping the environment or just really pushing it over the edge??

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

I think they also cause fires. See my post above. But what you wrote is exactly why I stay away from them. There was a big CM push a year or 2 ago that GE was doing trying to get these bad boys in the market. At the end of the CM it always said in that auctioneer speed "Contains mercury and must be disposed of in yadda yadda yadda way", Too fast honestly for me to catch half of what was said. But I couldn't help but think, ahhhh so more effecient yet the average person who is either dumb or lazy (which is a lot of freaking people) will just toss it in the garbage will then pollute the planet far worse then using a "TAD" bit more electricity. Yeah, no brainer I though. WTF is the point of these things. Gawd awfully ugly and the lighting sux as well. I will stick with my traditional bulb thank you.

Yeah, thats how it happens. If they are used in lamps (i.e. Upright) or some kind of chandaleer(sp?) they are 'safe'. Then again, like I said I have no references. Just going off a convo I had with a collegue. Might want to look into it though.

I use CFL because our energy supplier provided them (for 'free'). As they burn out, they are being replaced by incandescent bulbs. These excessive heat sources will offset the (thermostatically controlled) heating.

Be dogmatic, not thoughtful. It's easier, and you get bumper stickers.- Anon.

I shouldn't have to tell someone what a CFL is now days.

Why not? Why do you assume that in Europe we have the same acronyms as you in the US? In France NATO is called OTAN. The EU, the UE. So take your CFL and shove it. :)
