Riddle Me This: iPhone vs iPod Touch
-
The unsubsidized 32GB iPhone 4S costs $750, but the 32GB iPod Touch (can't be subsidized) costs $300. So, you're paying $450 for a phone without any extra features? :wtf: Is it just me, or is Apple royally screwing us? :((

The iPhone has double RAM than the iPod Touch, has a digital compass and a GPS, Oleophobic screen coating, larger battery, a way better camera + LED. Plus the iPhone 4S is equipped with the new A5 chip, while the iPod touch has the A4 chip.

I may actually consider that. For one, I imagine it would be easier for me to develop apps on a WP7 phone. Do you happen to know if there is a WP7 phone with: email, video camera, Facebook, Bank of America app, Pandora, web browser, TODO list or notes, maps, 3G/wifi/bluetooth connectivity, a touch screen, and a US carrier with a decent data plan? I'd say those are my most used features.

Sounds like you want a SPOF phone, not WP7.

That's about enough for me to boycott Apple.

I have so many reasons to boycott Apple, that's just another one on the bunch.

Despite not liking, not knowing deeply and not buying anything from apple I thinking you may be scratching only the surface when we talk about hardware. Have you verified if the processors are the same? As far as I know, the 4S got some hardware improvement, including the processor. That might justify some cash difference. So basically iPhone Price = iPod Touch + Phone Antenna + Some Hardware improvement + Lot of Hype I bet this urge that people have to always own the latest and shiniest of the shiniest allows apple to put that price on the phone.

I think you're asking the wrong question. I don't care about the processor. What applications can the iphone run which the ipod can't? What can you do with the iphone that you can't do with the ipod? Do these differences justify the price difference?

If you are just realising that then I have a great bridge I would like to sell you. Mate when you can't get a new battery without replacing the entire phone it should be bloody obvious you are being ripped off. Talk about built in obsolescence.

Can't fault you there. Glad I got rid of my iPhone and got an Android phone instead.
Why can't I find a signature that I can stick with? Are they all gone?

It may use hardware closer to the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 currently starts at $550 for the 8GB version. Can't seem to find a 32GB version.

How about when you compare that to the iPhone 4 (rather than the iPhone 4S)? The iPhone 4 is still stupidly expensive.

The iPhone4S is an iPhone4 with an A5 chip (and two radio modems). All the other specs that I mentioned are the same for the 4 and the 4S!

Not true. For example, the camera is different.

sorry, and that. but still u r comparin the ipod with the iphone, the iphone 4 and 4S have a lot more features than the ipod, which explains the price difference.

I wouldn't say is has a lot more features, if we compare the iPhone 4 to the latest iPod Touch. Here are the ones I now know of: compass, GPS, oleophobic screen coating, phone network connectivity. The 8GB iPhone 4 is currently $550. The 8GB iPod Touch is $200. That's a $350 price increase, or nearly 3x the cost (actually, 2.75x). All for those 4 features.

+camera, LED, dedicated mic for noise cancelation, double RAM, larger battery, a harder to manufacture design, wall socket power adaptor, earphones with mic... everything adds up

One of the cameras is better. The iPod Touch and iPhone 4 can take the same type of video, but the iPhone 4 can take 5 megapixel pictures, while the iPod Touch can take less than 1 megapixel pictures.

I wasn't aware of either of those, which do add some value.

They also overcharge for that. I bought one for about $10.

Perhaps an extra $5. I tried to get the exact cost of parts for both devices, but all I came up with was $188 for the iPhone 4 (that was last year though, and prices have surely gone down). Let me know if you can find an estimate of the parts for the iPod Touch 4G and perhaps we can do a sensible comparison. With the profit margin they are making on the iPhone and my guess for what it costs to make the iPod Touch (similar to the iPhone I'd say), they are really setting their price based on demand rather than cost to them. Thankfully, for me, other companies are finally coming up with products that are coming somewhat near what Apple is offering, so I can take my business elsewhere.

C'mon - aren't you in the software business? What's the cost of parts for a piece of software? What's the value? That's right - there is no relationship. There is obvious value in the iphone that many people are prepared to pay for.
The difference between the iPod Touch and the iPhone indicate the cost of the software is not an issue (the software on both is the same). And most companies will charge as much as they can for their product (based on supply/demand), regardless of the cost to produce that product. If they charge too much, however, another company will come along and offer a similar product for cheaper. And as a customer, I will choose the product based on my budget and requirements for a product. It might finally be time for me to choose something other than the iPhone. From a business perspective, a customer buying an iPhone is just a business transaction. From a customer perspective, the iPhone is looking more like an overpriced toy. And you should be thanking anybody who decides not to buy an iPhone. It drives the demand down, and lowers the price. :)
