So I bought a PS3 in Singapore some years ago, they make an excellent bluray player and I have even been known to play the odd game on it. Yesterday I went out and bought the Disney Earth and Ocean blurays, in Singapore. Unwrap one and stick it in the pissy 3, wrong region code. Fuck me roan are these people completely fucking stupid, if I buy a machine and a disc in the same city, in the same building even, I feel it is reasonable to expect them to work together. I was under the impression that the region code abomination had been retired as one of the more idiotic ideas the video/music industry had come up with. Who was the peanut brain who invented this region code abortion anyway, can we now sue the cretin for making it too difficult to buy a DVD (unless you are in the states of course). Nowhere that I can see does it say it is restricted to a region and I went over it with a magnifying glass. This does not mean it is not there but it certainly is not obvious! And then they want to bitch about piracy, stupid, moronic, greedy bastards want to thieve from me then bugger them, no longer will I have any compunction to download any content, normally I constrain myself to TV only but the hell with that. Still, tomorrow I get to see if I can extract my money from the stupid bastards who sold me the bloody discs. What a great opportunity to be really justifiably rude to some store clerk!

...and breathe :) Feel better for that? You think you got problems. My PS3 stopped outputting a signal. I tried AV and HDMI, nothing. I tried the 'Hold down the power button for a Video Reset' and no joy. Grumpily I have to take it to a repair shop and waste another £50 of my hard earned on it.

When I was in Sing, there was a store that sold multi-region DVD's. Not a DVD that'll play in any region, but DVD's for every region of the same film. More than once I got stung. On one occasion I was refused a refund because I'd 'damaged the goods' - I'd opened the packaging. Conts, the lot of them.

The whole region thing, as I understand it, is so they can release the films on DVD/BluRay at different times for different parts of the planet, so they came the same number of weeks after the film is shown at the cinemas. My other half is over there and has seen all the films I am still waiting to see, all because they are released 3months earlier there then here in the UK. So they can release the film just in Singapore just as it comes to the cinemas here.

That concept is so out of date it is ridiculous, we live in a global village, not the 80s. Beside these films were released ages ago.

To avoid this nonsense I bought a region free DVD player from Pioneer (I think.) The only people who doesn’t have any problems with DRMs, regions etc. are the pirates. People like as who pay for everything are fucked. After the Sony network was hacked recently my PS3 (otherwise a very good product) is sitting in the basement. And yes, Sony is forcing the piracy with its brainless humiliating practices. I think some decision making persons in Sony have to commit Seppuku at once and make the world a better place.
