    Why do folks insist in de-christianizing a christian holiday? I don't endorse, advocate or support anything that replaces the word "Christmas" with the word "Holiday". It's absurd. I've certainly noticed that no other religion's holidays are replaced with generic agnostic labels. Political correctness really pisses me off.

      Here, in Québec, we use the expression "Les fêtes" (french for "Holidays", note the plural) not because of political correctness, but because we are referring to the a period of the year that enclose both Christmas and New Year Day and the days in between. It is been like that for as long as I can remember, long before other religions acquired some visibility. But, on and around Christmas, we don't say "Happy holidays", we say "Happy Christmas".

        Tell that to the Pagans... Just about ALL of their holidays have been replaced and renamed. Personally, I only really like three holidays... 1) New Years... No religious overtones, just an excuse to get drunk and party (Ok, for my friends to get drunk - I don't drink) 2) 4th of July... In the words of Apu Nahasapeemapetalon, "Celebrate the anniversary of your country by blowing up a small part of it." I'm not overly patriotic, but fireworks are cool. 3) Halloween... Yes, it was originally a religious holiday, but now it's all about costumes and junkfood. I don't enjoy it as much as I used to, but it's still a fun little thing. As for Xmas, though... As a non-christian (And for that matter, a non-theist)... It's just another day off from work.

          Well, PC aside, almost all of Christmass has nothing to do with Jesus so they might as well rename it. 1) Saturnalia. The servants would be served at meals by the masters. A practise in todays public schools and the army (in the UK). 2) Pagan tradition of bringing greenery into the home. 3) Shortest day of the year with the sun being reborn. 4) Mistletoe. Druidic in origin. 5) Presents, eating, feasting, drinking. Saturnalia/Bachanalia mix. 6) Santa. Bacchus mutating into a Pepsi comercial. 7) Holly. Pagan symbol used by witches symbolising blood.

          ============================== Nothing to say.

            Ditto. I am not a "believer", but I still see it as an afront to those that are. And everyone was fine with the word "Christmas" back when I was a kid, and I saw no reason to change it.

              me too. I am not a Christian, nor am I religious. I don't look at Christmas as a religious holiday. It happens to be my favorite holiday though.

                  1. It is suppose to celebrate Jesus' birthday, which really is somewhere Mar-May. It was moved to Dec. 25 because of #3 above. My kids' Sunday school teacher doesn't like that I tell my kids that, but I don't care. I would rather them knowing the truth about why the holiday exists. Ironically, I still want them to believe in Santa, for no other reason than it is fun for me to try to hide the gifts and bring them out Christmas morning.

                      You think christmas is bad? In the Netherlands (and some other countries) we have a holiday on 5 december, called "Sinterklaas[^]", which comes from Saint Nikolaas. Here is a picture of him and his "Zwarte Pieten" (his helpers) Sinterklaas and Zwarte Pieten[^]. It's been a national holiday (no free day from work though) for many many years. It's mostly fun for the kids. So here is the deal, his helpers are black which is patronizing to black people. His mitre has a christian cross, which is insulting to muslims. Even within the Christian Church there are people who find him offending. In Sinterklaas songs we sing that bad children get beaten with a rod and get taken to Spain (where he somehow comes from) which is, of course, really old-fashioned and does not get past the morals police. Another suggestion is that he might be a pedophile as children get to sit in his lap. Speaking of political correctness... It's funny how none of this was a problem some 10 to 20 years ago.

                        The 5.? Isn't St. Nicolaus the next day, the 6.?

                        And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:

                            How fucking dare they venture to say "Holidays" instead of "Christmas"? They might as well have burned the American flag with the Constitution whilst bombing an orphanage, for how damaging, insulting and un-American it is. What is it, fucking Nazi Germany? You should take one of your guns next time so you can blow their fucking head off next time they wish you "happy holidays". You do not have to stand for this injustice.

                              You're a little late to this party, but...
