Is the UK a country, or are it's constituent states countries, or both?

We have a huge bucket of semantics to wade through to get to the answer. England [and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland] is a country in its own right. The UK is a sovereign state and so is thought of as a country.

England, Wales and Scotland are countries on the island of Great Britain (Less Britain is part of what is now France). Northern Ireland is a (sort of) country on the island of Ireland. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a sovereign state governed by the UK Government under the direction of the fascist EU. The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are self-governing states under the protection of the Crown (Head of State of the UK). Simples tsk!

Interesting* Fact. Berwick-upon-tweed is still at war with Germany. At the declaration of war, it hadn't been decided whether BoT was in England or Scotland, so England, Scotland and Berwick-upon-tweed declared war on Germany etc. By the end of the war, the matter had been settled, so only England and Scotland declared peace.

I don't think you'll find many (southern) Irishmen who believe their country is part of the British Isles.

Except Scotland has its own laws and the chanel islands have a different pound to the mainland, with the Queen as their head, are not part of the UK and have their own laws. So no, they are seperate countries, with seperate languages too. :)
