Plastic is fantastic

I read the subject and thought you'd gone in for cosmetic surgery. I still reckon they should just use field trips to the local strip club and touring phone booths instead of sex ed - at least that prepares them for what really lies ahead of them.

Nobody will get it, I presume. It's a reminiscence of a popular french rock song of the 90's, "Le plastique, c'est fantastique"[^] (very approximatively translated by google here[^], but you should get the general meaning :))

"I'm a barbie girl in a barbie world life is plastic it's fantastic" is probably known to a wider audience ;)

Doesn't it? Very funny video too. Off the top of my head, I'd say Songs for the Deaf and Tori Amos's Scarlett's Walk are my favourite CDs from last year. Trying to pick one from the other is like comparing apples and oranges, it's a mood thing. To be fair, for some reason that I can't figure out, I keep forgetting to buy Foo Fighters' One By One, which from what I've heard at least matches up to Songs for... In fact, you know what? Think I might go and order that now while it's on my mind. :-D Paul Pleasently caving in, I come undone - Queens of the Stone Age, No One Knows

Well judging by the two in five of them who will probably have children before they leave high school, that seems not to be the case. :((

They are one of the best - topped only (IMHO) by Black Sabbath. Says a lot for modern rock music doesn't it. :| Foo Fighters' One By One is great is you're feeling a little down in the dumps or just downright depressed. I dunno, the entire album just kind of sums up my daily mood at the moment which is why they've scored a permanent slot in my sig space. Does it match up to QOTSA and SFTD? No - not in my opinion, but it is still top notch music.

Agreed. Not that I'm completely averse to the modern "crap", but that's more background while I'm working stuff. QOTSA, FF, Creed, Staind and Muse are pretty much the only two "modern" rock bands I listen to. David Wulff wrote: They are one of the best - topped only (IMHO) by Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath rock, Blizzard of Ozz too (gotta love that Randy Rhodes). Still listen to a lot of Led Zep, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana. Other than that, I go for certain progressive bands from all eras, from Beatles and Floyd (inc. Roger Waters solo) to Marillion, Genesis (inc. Peter Gabrial solo) and Dream Theatre. And then there's the female soloists: Tori, Cranberries, Alanis, Jewel, Jane Siberry, even No Doubt when the mood hits me. And the occasional touch of Brit Pop, especially the first Longpigs CD. Radiohead and REM tend to hit my playlist for months on end and then disappear for as long, Eminem too. Enigma, Clannad, All About Eve, Mike Oldfield and the like for severe chillout purposes; Gorillaz and Tenacious D for amusement value. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty, Tom Waits... I could go on for ever. You can tell I like to have something for every mood. Anyway, I've ordered One By One now :-D. Paul Pleasently caving in, I come undone - Queens of the Stone Age, No One Knows

About some Texan schools pretending to do sexual education[^]
Angels banished from heaven have no choice but to become demons Cowboy Bebop
For me this article is not about condoms or sex or teenagers or AIDS. This article is about how dangerous people who refuse to think can be to our society. It's about how dangerous any ideology that is teaching people not to think is for our lives and for the lives of our children. If there is one thing that I am prejudiced against - I am prejudiced against people who refuse to think...

What are in your opinion the real issues ?
Angels banished from heaven have no choice but to become demons Cowboy Bebop
The conservative stance is not that condoms do not help prevent disease but when the school readily marketed them the promiscuity (and disease) rapidly escalated, as it is now ok to do so. Those who wish to attack the religious (conservative) viewpoint have only found a few to quote to distort what the position really is and to make the conservative side look stupid. The number one item that will make me totally disrespect someone is when they can only use the above tactic (misrepresentation) to sell their position. Or if you can only justify your opinion by totally misrepresenting what the other sides opinion is, then you likely have nothing that is actually worth justifying in the first place. If you can justify your opinion while looking for the best the other side has to offer, than you can actually stand by it and IMO are worth while if I agree or not. "I will find a new sig someday."

Do you seriously believe that students only start having sex when teachers at school talk about it? I'm pushing 20 years since I was in middle high school and I know my interest in sex was on the boil well before any talk of it at school. When they did start it didn't change my thoughts or attitude or my luck. But I did get some before school finished and I still say that would have happened sex ed or not. It all seems to be a storm in a teacup. If parents haven't educated their kids on what sex is all about and don't trust them when their old enough to physically get into it then it's too damn late. Not talking about condoms isn't going to fix anything. If parents haven't educated their kids on what sex is all about and don't trust them when their old enough to physically get into it then it's too damn late. Agreed My point was the article was manipulating what the issue was by making one side look stupid and not presenting what the feelings of the conservative side was. IMO they discredited themselves and their cause by showing how little they understood. You do not make progress towards a common solution by calling the other person stupid. Especially when they know you have ignored what they have been saying. Now I am 35 years out. My guesstimate is the promiscuity for your group was up say 5 to 10 percent from mine. But many things changed, mostly mobility of the children. So what caused it, for this discussion I do not care. "I will find a new sig someday."

It's getting late, I'm tired and at home on a shitty dial-up connection so I am going from memory here (which if history has proven anything is a bad idea on my part) as I'm not going to click on the link and reread the article. Didn't the conservative (or whoever it was) start the misrepresentation when they started their anti-condom campaign by comparing the size of the AIDS virus to the pores on condoms? Still seems to me someone somewhere needs to get themselves a bit of a root to remember that it is not all bad (and no I didn't mean you).
