So I work for a consulting firm that uses it and my client does as well. There doesn't seem to be away to integrate the accounts (or is there?), but I also can't seem to get 2 instances running on my Windows 7 box. Anyone know how to do this? Also, do you know if it is possible to set up an external contact that also uses it? (and how)

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

Yeah that app has been a staple at my workplace for years and is really a disappointment if it is supposed to be MS's answer to inter-office IM communication. I had a lot of gripes with it from the beginning, which I have either repressed or become so used to that I don't even notice them now. The one thing I like about it is its integration with MS Outlook. Most people overlook the little presence indicators on the To/CC lines on emails. You can quickly start an IM session with anybody on an email by clicking their indicator and choosing Reply via Instant Message. This reply didn't answer your questions at all.

Yeah the integration is the key. I have seen it integrated into many other things as well (documents, websites etc.) But it is lacking many essential things that are available in other IMs and some of the things are just plain quirky. But it is what it is and I have no choice but to use it. Just would like to atleast talk with ALL of my contacts, not just ones at this site.

MS' Lync 2010 is pretty well thought out. Albeit it doesn't have an integrated spellcheck, which is idiotic imo. It also integrates with AD. I don't think you can use external contacts with Communicator. May want to consider using Yammer instead if price is an issue?

Something worth reading, albeit it's invincible!

Communicator has a federation ability to connect office communicator across multiple sites (i.e. multiple DNS records). To do this you need a server that is publically accessable with the appropriate OCS service running (I hear it was a pain for the tech to work out the appropriate certificates that needed to be installed on the right servers to get it working). Once that is done you enter their email address and wait for them to add you to their list. You can also add hotmail/live email addresses to the list using this interesting formula my.email(domain.com)@msn.com (my.email@domain.com).
