Such Hacks are Just Fun

Bad hacks are just that - BAD HACKS!!! But hard time is just that - HARD TIME!!! I suggest the author do some hard time, and then speak out about what he thinks somebody should get for ruining a bit of entertainment. Hard time is for people that cause real harm to real people, not virtual harm to virtual people. GET REAL MAN, AND GROW UP!!!

I have a feeling that you have posted this in the wrong place.

Two points to consider: Is hacking illegal? Should people who commit times escape punishment?

Generally speaking, maybe... It depends on who asked you to do what to whom. ( If you are not doing it on behalf of somebody, it's usually illegal - unless you are messing around with your own sites or equipment ) If you are working for a government agency, like the ones mentioned in Security: It’s Getting Worse[^], your holiday options might become somewhat limited - I guess it would be a good idea to check out extradition agreements before traveling abroad. If you are doing penetration testing, or other kinds of hacks to check out the security of a company - on their behalf - it's usually legal, but you still need to make sure you are not doing something that might threaten property or lives or anything else that might cause grief to your client.

I'm afraid you lost me there, or did you mean crimes and not times?

I meant crimes. I was typing on a phone, hence the brevity of the post.

I kind of agree with this part. I do think that punishing someone for making the aim bot with jail time might be harsh, but then again if you look at it abstractly it may not be. Thinking of it as someone cheating on a video game seems silly, but it is still hacking. Hacking is illegal unless you have permission. You already know a few things about the hacker in question: 1) They have some degree of computer skills (because they were able to hack the game in the first place) 2) They are willing to break the rules 3) They have hacked legitimate software Did they do monitary damages? Well, there are already teams in place at most companies (punkbuster was quoted once) that are in place because of this. Those teams cost money. I have avoided a game because people told me they can't keep hackers out. It does cost the company money, significant amounts or not. It's a breach of security as well. If I were to hack into local -x- companies computer and just leave a note saying hello on the desktop/home of the target I believe I'd be in a good deal of trouble. If you actually look at it, it's illegal. Annoying is just a side thought.
