When given a rusty pile of metal that used to be a car, a mechanic can advise the customer that it's beyond economical repair as another way of saying that they're best to forget about their old car and find a new one. Has anybody heard of something similar to describe a website that somebody wants tweaking but really it needs starting from scratch (the existing site uses iframes with content generated by Microsoft Word)?

Could you save money and use Notepad+ instead of word? :)

One step ahead of you, I'm using Notepad++ :) (still can't use vim though) How do you explain to someone that Word is a word processor not an HTML editor, when all they care about is what the page renders like? I mentioned page size being reduced, but it seemed lost on them - maybe I need to tell them that every time Word saves a webpage, a kitten is killed (and the resulting HTML is generated by the kitten's death roll on the keyboard.)

You know, technically, there's no such thing as an HTML editor... since it's just text.

Plus... why not just guide your customer? ...do you really expect them to know why Word isn't really a good choice for making webpages? ...if they knew that they probably wouldn't have hired you... that's why you make the big bucks. ;)

dude i feel your pain -one of the apps i work in had its beginnings in 1994, its current code state is borland builder 6 (yes 6) The "business" is still on XP, and a shift to 7 is in the works we're told. The app might run ok in 7, but does Borland builder? i forsee much wailing and gnashing of teeth. But onthe bright side I'll be able to say "i told you so" :| Bryce

I really use the word for a car beyond repair: Totalschaden

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
                    And it came worse.

I've not heard a specific term for this, but you could use 'economic repair' (I've not heard of that one either) just as well with computer assets as physical ones. If they're hiring you, it should be because they respect your domain knowledge, so just tell them that it will be quicker and cheaper to rewrite it properly than to tweak it. And hopefully teach them a few things about why you shouldn't write websites in Word while you're at it, heh.
