Annoying IQ Test
-
Someone ask me this IQ Test and I got really annoyed when I found out the answer. Here it is: If 1 = 5, and 2 = 125, and 3 = 450, and 4 = 1250, then 5 = ?

As is often the case, there are an infinite number of correct answers. Examples: the cubic polynomial yields: 5 => 2785 one of the infinite number of fourth order polynomials yields: 5 => -1155 :)

Fed up by FireFox memory leaks I switched to Opera and now CP doesn't perform its paste magic, so links will not be offered. Sorry.

Except that IQ tests don't usually require curve fitting software. There is a pattern here - that's the IQ bit. At the moment mine is 75.

You're half asleep then? :)

"1" was the logical answer, but, as it wasn't confirmed, I tried to examine this as a what's-next-in-series type of question. This just didn't make it, and, as it was presented as part of an IQ test, brute force methods are (should be) excluded. So I googled "1=5 2=25" and came up with: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/blogger/thread?tid=2570697c07e3c6e3&hl=en[^] The poster of the question (a level seven whatever it is) congratulated other posters on their correct answer: 1 So why, exactly, were you annoyed?

We clearly disagree on the attack strategy expected by the poser of the question (we never actually saw the original preposition). The IQ-test reference is the closest we have to determining expectations. I invoke Occam's razor .

If 1 is the correct answer which it could well be then this is not an IQ test.

You are wrong. The 5th value is certainly not 1. The function to calculate the values is f(x) = 5^X. f(1) = 5 f(2) = 25 f(3) = 125 f(4) = 625 f(5) = 3125
I'm invincible, I can't be vinced
I think you ought to recheck the beginning of the thread:

f(4) = 625"If 1 = 5, and 2 = 125, and 3 = 450, and 4 = 1250, then 5 = ?"
f(1) = 5 5^1 f(2) = 125 5^3 f(3) = 450 5^2 * 3^2 *2 f(4) = 1250 5^5 * 5^5 *2 f(f) = ????

There is nothing implied (as presented) that transitive properties are no longer in effect. I also need to admit that nothing implies they are, either. So, maybe the intelligence test is that, if no pattern exists mathematically (my contention) then the answer is not a calculated pattern, but rather by default, a logical inference.

I like this answer. If you assume the numberic digits are just characters, they are essentially variables. So when you see "1 = 5", it's like seeing "A = B". So when you see, "B = ?", you know "B = A", which means "5 = 1". Still, I wish I could figure out if there is a numeric pattern. :)
