Yeah, it's a shame that some people felt that his posts contravene the criteria of spamming, trolling or abuse. I didn't see swearing anywhere in that list. I am glad you brought this up my friend because it seems that the abuse button has become the weapon of first choice.

When the last resort becomes the first response then things are pretty bad.

We hooked up the "Report Member" system to the "report message" in order to help those who report spammers also report the spam accounts. I'm going to unhook them. A mistake by myself last week, a possible one by another admin and now some verbal diarrhoea causing an overreaction means that the system is too sensitive.

Pete, he deliberately bypasssed the swear filter - the don't tell me you couldn't work out what 'f' followed asterisks meant. The use of 'fag as a derogatory erm. "hope she's raped". Yes, it's me and I droppped in a bit to see if CP had changed but it hasn't.

I reported the below post as abusive - quite openly - see here Out of Line[^] . I did not intend that MM's account be suspended. I see it's now in the Soapbox, which, IMO is the place for it. I don't know if you are aware how difficult it is for women to read this stuff. We are developers too and I would hope that we would be seen as peers rather than objects to be derided and abused.

Annie, this was one I thought long and hard about. Being honest, i didn't read all his post. As a prissy Englishman I can only take so much swearing before I change channels. Having gone back and read the posts, I agree that the post was bang out of line, in fact it was darn right offensive. But, it was an abusive message, not an abusive account which was why I commented in the way I did. As I said, though, it has lately appeared that marking accounts as abusive has become the first resort. I won't make excuses that I think Michael was joking because it was downright offensive. You know me well enough now to know that I am a fan of ladies being treated with equality. Sadly I can't see the stain of the macho posturing disappearing anytime soon. I will continue to do what I can, when I can.

You fuckin' muppet, the aterixes are put there by the swear filter. If I want to bypass, I just put a ' at the end instead of the g, and if they haven't fixed the filter it won't be censored. And thanks to the real time Preview, I can see the filter has been fixed.

I think that, knowing MM as we do, this is how he is. I can see that it might be deemed offensive but no need to go overboard. I find his posts amusing for their reliance on invective and vitriol to make his point which is usually vacuous and pointless. You can always brush past his posts but to take the time to read them, knowing his reputation and then complain is ridiculous. However, to take the other side, he should post in the soapbox to begin with as he knows, full well, that he will absolutely offend someone.

We know that's not going to happen. He gets more 5s for any word containing fuck than a newbie gets 1s for asking a programming question in the Lounge. He's part of CP folklore, that's ok. I get it.

I get off the train here. Wishing someone was raped by an elephant in the lounge. I know it's his fucked up sense of humour that even I find funny most of the time. But in the lounge and having regulars and respected members blaming whoever reported that message as abusive. Wow!

You misunderstand me. I agree with people voting the message as abusive. It was the fact that people had appeared to vote him as abusive. The two things are different but it appeared that people were treating them the same. That's what I disagree with.

How's it going Michael. You made a lot of news this weekend I see. Anyhow, not here to judge. Just wanted to know how your diabetes crap is going for you these days. Take care.

You misunderstand me. I agree with people voting the message as abusive. It was the fact that people had appeared to vote him as abusive. The two things are different but it appeared that people were treating them the same. That's what I disagree with.

Well that's not correct in this case. People were voting the message as abusive, but Chris changed the code to auto-vote the profile as abusive too whenever someone marked a post as abusive. I thought this was a pretty bad idea and told him so in the Suggestions forum. So it was just bad design rather than members incorrectly voting his profile as abusive.
