I got this as a reply to the email i sent to www.bizspark.com[bizpark] "Can you please give me a brief idea as to what the application does e.g. CRM/Social Media etc. Once I know this info, you can go ahead and register for BizSpark at www.bizspark.com" The subject of the email was: "Do i qualify for bizspark membership"? I really wonder if i should tell anyone my idea! Big corporations steals ideas of small businesses. We have seen that on TV :-D

Add a disclaimer at the top that the reader must stop reading if they do not agree to a confidentiality agreement. At least that will protect you legally. Also try signing it with a digital signature and CC a copy to yourself.

He is not asking for the details of the project, just a vague outline. Later you will need to put together a complete business case and describe your idea in more detail to actually get the bizspark support. We failed to get the requisite support but then the app was just a plain old Silverlight LOB app.

I was at a Microsoft Summer Camp today, and we had a Q&A with a legal advisor. He mentioned that when people go to make suggestions for apps, they won't listen to them, because if they already have that project under development, then legal issues could come up later about who had the idea first. Then, with their Imagine Cup, they have specific licence terms that they will not lay any claim to the IP of any of the entries. I doubt they'd steal your idea, but you could ask about their terms and conditions. In business situations, ALWAYS read the bloody EULA!

I know another company that recently tried signing up for BizSpark and were rejected without any particular reason what-so-ever. I ended up contacting MS directly to ask what their reasons were and they couldn't give me an answer (ie. there wasn't one). So this resulted in a number of emails back and forth to people at MS arguing another company's right to BizSpark based on the very vague qualifying terms they outline on their site - that company did get signed up. My point? I don't think anyone that reviews the submissions has 2 freaking clues so I wouldn't worry about anyone stealing an idea. That being said, take the appropriate precautions (as suggested by other responses). I would suggest being incredibly vague and don't give them any more information than you have to - eg. "we're building a SaaS based web tool for social networking using MS tools". The only qualifying criteria are supposed to be that you're a startup with less than $x millions in revenues that is building or proving solutions using MS technology. Best of luck.
