I suspect that it would take far more than one terminally stupid post to generate that many negative points. We usually reserve that much abuse for really obnoxious trolls. Such a low score indicates a pattern of extremely bad posts which few can accumulate without trying. No one does so accidentally. Even a blind squirrel finds an occasional acorn, and even the least welcome members of the community occasionally post something intelligent enough to get up-voted. If this rating is truly a surprise to you, I suggest that you take a break, spend some time grazing the site without posting to get a sense of the community, then cautiously venture back into the stream once you've gained your bearings.

Actually I find it is affirmation of a sort, being an article writer and doing a little in the support forums is rewarded by rep points and a warm fuzzy feeling. It is even more rewarding when you actually don't chase after the dammed things.

if you were really 'working hard' on getting a positive reputation you wouldn't have been within range of negatives in the first place 2) even as a joke that previous post would have deserved downrating 3) crying about downvotes on Lounge posts, in another Lounge post, will, in itself, result in further downvoting of the whining post, potentially sucking you into a perpetual downvote-whine cycle 4) if you really care about rep, stop posting in the Lounge and start helping people in the other forums and in Q&A, or post some quality articles.
